fisher 1280x

WALT FISCHER

New member
I have recently purchased a fisher 1280x and could use some pointers on how best to operate the unit. I am new to the sport and have never used a metal detector before. I am looking forward to walking some local michigan beaches and local farms. How well does this metal detector work on land? Is there anything different you have to do when operating on land vs water? Any help would be appreciated thanks for your support up front.

Hi Walt,

I used to use my CZ-20 on land when hunting on rainy days and it has the same housing as your 1280 more or less.
My first suggestion to make your experience more enjoyable is to get yourself the chest-mount setup, (or belt mount it if you prefer) they are heavy machines on stock rod mount after a couple of hours of swinging.
The guy I bought my detector from is one of the best water-hunters there is and he used the 1280x and swore by it so it will definately deliver the goods.

Hope this is helpful,

HH,
Drew.

Hi Walt,

get a nail and set your disc to just reject the nail and hunt that setting with medium to preset sensitivity level for your first couple of hunts. Dig any good repeatable signals that sound the same from North-South and East-West crisscross sweeps and it will help get a feel for the machines responses and what they mean.
Also I suggest you post the same info request on the beach and water hunting forum if you have not done so already.

Cheers,

Drew.

I bought a 1280X nearly a year ago and haven't had it wet yet. Glad to see something posted on it. I was told the old CZ was better but recent posts may dispell that rumor. All the lakes are into their flood pools around here and have been all summer so beach hunting is not possible. They usually draw down in the fall so we'll see then....maybe? Onus

Hi Walt - My 1280 is very much like my 1266 that I use always. I would suggest that you go out and dig every signal till you find a setting you can live with - be it hi or low or whatever. I can tell you that if you set things too high you will miss a lot of the goodies. Steve in so az

Hey Walt,
I've been using a 1280X for 19 years on salt beaches and I've found that if you set the sensitivity too high it wipes out a lot of targets. Usually I turn the sens up full and then turn it down until the chatter just stops in the dry sand. when you go wet there will be a little chatter, especially if you don't keep your coil level but you'll get the good targets. Also I use a setting of about 21/2 on the disc. Thats all ballpark. the conditions and settings change from day to day so its good to reset every time you go out. happy hunting. Ed

Hi Walt. I did the exact same thing and bought a 1280x for my first machine. It was winter and I wanted a machine I could get out and use right away ( in the rain ). Just use the advice you've already received above and you're ready to go. It's a good, solid unit that worked great for me on land ( I never took it underwater ). Keep practicing and learn the sounds and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what it will help you find. JMHO
