Fisher 1280X Question

I'm considering the purchase of a Fisher 1280X water unit but cannot handle the weight of the detector with the control box mounted on the shaft. I asked my local dealer if I could hip or chest mount the control box and he said I could but doing so presents absnormal cable wear. Has that been the experience of anyone here?

Senior,

I have a cz-20 that I chest mount and haven't had any trouble with the cable. I hunt strictly in the water with the unit so snags aren't usually a problem.

Unit slips right off rod and right onto chestmount & vice versa.

Steve,

Can you post a picture of what the unit looks like in action - I am interested in knowing how you attach the cable to the lower rod with zip or Velcro straps, or if you do at all. Put another way, do you let the cable hang lose or to you attach it part way up the lower rod to prevent false signals? I have a CZ-21 and I want to be sure I do it correctly - I will be hunting with the control box in the chest mount position with the mount you use. Thanks.

Thanks Steve, Can the Control Housing Be Hip and or Waist Mounted As Well? I Seem To Remember The 1280X Comes w/brackets to waist or hip mount the unit?

Darryl,

I have my cable velcro'ed to the shaft near the coil, near the coil, midway up and then again right below where the box mounts on the shaft then there are about 4 ft of cable loose. Sorry I can't take a picture until my camera comes back from the camera doctor, I dropped it which made the view screen into a very pretty kaleidascope!

Seeker,

yes it can be waiste/belt mounted if you bought it new it came with a plastic belt mount the control box slides right onto. When I used this I was glad to get box off from shaft but in short order found out I didn't care for the belt mount. When I waded into water deeper than my belt the control box would try to float up which made the control knobs stick into my side/belly. I found this to be very uncomfortable, particuliarly when hunting for extended periods. I have a friend who puts box behind him and says it doesn't bother him. But it's tuff to get to the controls.

When mounted on my chest, I have to be blowing bubbles before it floats up so that problem is solved. I also like to use the pinpoint button and hunt in auto tune (cz-20) and switch back to 0 discrimination after a hit to try to id stuff. which is easily done with unit right there on my chest.

Thanks for the info on the cable. That is just how I used to do my Fisher Gold Bug 2 and my Jimmy Sierra XLT when I chest mounted them. Thanks again. Looking forward to getting the thing in the water when the weather gets better. Have a great weekend everyone!

I have used my 1280 for the last 14 years as a hipmount with no problems at all. Fisher makes ( did make) a chest mount harness also.

Thank you all for your feed back and shared experience. I'll likely order a 1280X in the next few weeks or so.
