Fisher 1280X Air test (help needed)

Tony

Member
Can anyone who has the Fisher 1280X Aquanaut please air test some coins please.

If you can use no DISC and Sensitivity at maximum at 10.

Air tests for dimes, nickels or quarters would be really appreciated so I can compare to my model.

Does anyone know if the 1280X goes deeper in ground than air test?

Thanks very much,

Tony.

Tony:

Not sure what size coil you have but my 1280X has the 10 1/2. Set mine up and tested with Disc. full OFF and Sens full ON. Lots of noise with Sens full ON, so to be fair, I turned it down so most of the noise disappeared ( Between 8 and 9 ). Tested a silver dime and received good signal at 10" and the silver quarter gave a good signal at 12". I could hear both coins at depths somewhat deeper than I described but I was listening closer than I might be when hunting. No doubt that both coins responded at depths greater than described above. The 1280X finds them deep!

Books should be there most any day now. HH

Thanks Ron,

I have the 10.5" as well but I'm only getting 6" on a quarter and 5" on a dime !
This is half the depth that you are getting.

No DISC and SENS at 10....not getting any falsing which suggests that the unit isn't performing correctly?

Something isn't right here.......it might have to go back to the dealer.

Look forward to reading the books.

Thanks,
Tony

Tony make sure your going apples for apples here. What batteries are you using rechargeable or Alkaline. Brand name or dollars store. New or 25 hrs old? This all leads to depth. The air test is a poor test at best. When you bought your detector you should have planted a coin garden in your yard. This is a true test of depth. I think when I move to my current home 19 yrs ago I did it the first week.
Its the best thing I have ever learned to do.
Now I just did the same air test you were doing on a 1280x 10.5in and I received signals at only 4 in on a dime 6 on a mercury dime. These are 30hrs old batteries. I replaced the batteries and now I am back around 8.5 and 11 inches. I bought some dollar store batteries and they are brand new they are 4 and 5 inches on the same targets. You can't discriminate out a dime with 1280x it really a bad choice to use! Any time I have ever set any machine up I use a nickel and trash items! My 1208x is 18 yrs old!
This past week on the NJ beach 40% of my fines were dimes. The nickel being the second most finds. Each group were in the hundreds of coins found during and after the storm. If you have a1280x manual they give good instructions of setting the machine up.

Thanks Steve for the email,

The batteries are brand new AA Alkalines Panasonic (Made in Japan) cells with expiry in 2016.
I also tried Duracell's (Made in the USA) with expiry in 2015.

Each AA cell reads 1.6V so they are well charged.

Results were the same for both sets of batteries.

I just wanted a reference point between two different 1280X's......I feel my 1280X is 40% to 50% down on sensitivity to yours and Ron's machines.

Because the 1280X is so easy to set up then I'm confident it's not operator error.

I'll keep you posted on where things go.....when my dealer gets back to me.

Tony.

I read your post so tested my 1280X. I get about 7 inches with a dime and 8 3/4 inches with a quarter. These are real measurements and not guesses. Batts are new alks. coil is 10.5. This is typicle of several that I have tested over the years. I have never seen one that will get a response from a dime at anthing near 10 inches. perhaps my ears are bad. Your machine sounds about average.

Its a PROVEN fact that some machines Same make Same model Same year and same batteries are just hotter than others. Same with ANY electronics. Just the nature of the beast.

Tested both, the silver dime and the silver quarter, using a ruler to measure the distance. Like I said.....I could still hear the response on both at greater distances but a lot weaker. Sens. was turned down to between #8 and #9 to eliminate the noise.

My 1280X is a Fisher Labs (Los Banos) machine bought in April 1999. It has always been a deep machine and I considered using it for relic hunting. Not interested in overstating the abilities of my 1280X, just telling it like it is. HH

Thanks Ron,

I'd be hanging onto your unit for sure.....:hot:

Maybe they "don't build them like they used to"....quite literally.

The 1280X appears unchanged on the outside but what about the inside?
Have they skimped on quality connectors, resistors, capacitors, etc.
What (if any) shortcuts have they introduced to save money ?????

My 1280X has gone back to the dealer.

Tony.
