anybody have ever hipmount a 1280 and used it for relic hunting how deep is it and does it discriminate iron good and still get buttons thanks hal

The 1280-X was designed specifically for salt water work. It'll do other jobs, but not particularly well. For land work you'd be a lot better off with a Fisher F2 (about $200), or a BH Platinum or Teknetics Delta (more like the $250-350 range). Of course you could spend more if you've got it, but even those relatively low cost units will outshoot the 1280-X in land use.

You can use it on land. There is a neck harness you can buy which helps with the weight back in the 90's that was ALL I hunted with made some good finds. Back then mine had the 10.5" coil. I bought a used detector about a month ago with the 8" coil it seems to work better on land. the only down size is the weight if you hunt with it on the shaft. Yes other detectors will work better on land but if that what you want and the onlt detector you have don't let it stop you.

Dave J.,

I thought the 1280-X was set-up for fresh water? My father's always acted up at the ocean, but not at the lakes. I have a CZ-20 and never had the problems he had. Just curious if he had his set up incorrectly somehow...
