Fisher 1266x

Ran across a pretty nice 1266x the other day and brought it home. Fisher created a beast when they built the 1266x.....solid as a rock and built to last..... more than I can say for some of the new stuff out there. I have owned almost all of the 1200x series starting back in about 1982 with a 1220x
with the fish hook handle. All were good coin hunters, but the 1266x was the king of the hill. Look in the older treasure magazines from the early 90's and see that almost every relic hunter pictured was hunting with a 1266x and many still use them after all these years. The deepest target I ever dug was with a 1266x with a Depthmaster on it... a sterling silver victorian medal at close to 14 inches deep. Yep, I love these classic old detectors and would like to hear from other owners and their experiences with the 1266x..................................Roger

Roger, Thanks for the post,
I've been hunting with the same 1266x since 1992. My wife bought it for me for Christmas after my nautilus bit the dirt. You're right they are built to last. The deepest target I've dug with this machine was a lock plate from a musket at close to 15". I've dug many bullets at 9 to 12 inches. I personally don't think that many of the new machines, with the exception of the new pulse machines, have a whole lot of advantage on depth. I hunt with the all metal side set at 2 and the disc. side set at 4. I did a little backyard test the other day. I buried a .58 cal. bullet. a union eagle button, a small brass buckle, a rusty nail, half of a horse shoe, a nickel, a dime, a dime on edge, and a rusty nail, all at about 6 inches. In all metal the machine sounded off loud and clear on all items except the nail, it was a broken signal. In disc. mode all items sounded loud and clear except the nail, the dime on edge, and the nickel. The nail and the dime on edge gave a broken signal, the nickel wa s not there. Had a friend come over with one of the newer machines. In all metal the results were almost identical. In disc. the results were close on all items with the exception of the dime on edge and the small brass buckle. The dime on edge gave a very slight audio but high numbers. The small brass buckle read as a ferrous item. Just goes to show that with any machine you'll find more in all metal, but thats just not practical in all situations. The 1266x is a powerful unit and can certainly holds its on even with all this new technology. I'll never part with mine. But I do see one true advantage with the new machines. Thats the multiple tones. If Fisher would come out with a new 1266 and call it the 1266-2t, low tone iron, high tone everything else, they'd have us ole boys coming out of the woodwork to buy one.

What was the Depthmaster?

It was (is) a little box that goes inline of your headphones and the detector that boost the audio signal.

hey there too much trash this is exactly how my newdeep tech rg 1000 has 2 tones low for iron and tone for the rest but i mainly use the disc mode because it works very well and it is deep!

theotherleggohead, the depthmaster was a small unit that velcroed onto your detector and plugged into the headphone jack, then the headphones plugged into the depthmaster. it amplified the weaker deep signals and surpressed the shallow loud signals so they wouldn't hurt your ears.
they most defininately worked and were pretty popular in the 80' and 90's.

2 much trash ,
glad to hear of another fan of the 1266x. I hunted with these detectors for many years and found tons of old silver and copper coins with them, so I'm pretty partial to them myself. I sure wish one of my detecting buddies would buy a Garretts at pro.... I'd love to go out and smoke their ass with the 1266x.
The poor old Garrett wouldn't stand a chance against the Fisher...lol. My main machine now is a cz5 and it will trump the 1266x in most cases, but the 1266x will hold it's own against the cz. Fisher would sell a ton of machines if they put tones on the 1266 like you said. All of us old timers would jump all over a detector like that....no bells and whistles, just raw power. I seriously doubt we will ever see this happen as First Texican seems to want to get rid of all the older Fishers and come out with the high dollar detectors. Thanks for your post and happy hunting......

hey amcjavelin, glad to hear you like that new detector. It looks like a very nice machine.

I have both the 1266x and xb. Great machines. I would like to find a depthmaster, and one of the light modules that plug into the phone jack. Just to have them.

Still have my Depthmaster unit and also the depthmaster "Superphones", they were awesome and really work, Still use my headphones.

Sound Amp that went between the detector jack and the earphones, it would amplify deep low tone so you could hear deep target that the detector couldn't make audioable. worked awesome, also toned down large shallow tagets so it wouldn't blow your ears off. Fantastic on my Fisher 1265X and Fisher 555-D.VLF
