First XT-50 hunt

New member
I just got my XT50 this week and got to try it for the first time today. I just took it to a local grade school that always produces a few coins.

Likes: The XT50 is light weight, balanced well, easy to use, and locks on targets well.

Dislikes: The coil won't stay tight. It looks like I need to add a thin washer. I just don't get it. How hard could it be to make the coil fit the shaft? I shouldn't have to add anything. I know this is minor but it ticks me off.

Anyway I found several quarters, dimes, a nickel, several pennies (both zinc and copper), and a dollar coin.

Oh, I almost forgot. I found a nice little 14k gold ring with a stone. It was in the bark chips and read a solid 6 on the meter. The quarter and the dollar coin both read 42. The dimes read 36 with a couple jumping to 39 and the zinc pennies read 30. The copper pennies read 36.

I hope you can see the pictures. I tried to focus better on the ring but no luck.

Needless to say I love this machine except for the sloppy coil mount.

Nice finds Harold! Congrats on the ring.
Before adding any washers to the coil mount try cleaning the existing ones with some rubbing alcohol. It seemed to me that they had that greasy just manufactured feel that some rubber and plastics have when new. I wiped em good with the alcohol and scuffed em up a bit with 100 grit sand paper and it helped.

I'll give that a try. It looks to be like the coil tabs are just a little too far apart because they are bending in. I try your fix and see how it does. I don't mind adding something.

It's a great detector. I just wish I had got it sooner. The display is great and easy to see. I think the Xterra's have set a new standard that will be hard to follow.

I knew you'd love the machine.

Mine hasn't experienced any of the coil "flop" that you mention. Digger noted a few posts back that once a bit of dirt grit gets in between the washer & coil it should snug up. Or you could add a thin washer as you suggested.

Anyway, once again, nice work & glad that you like the 50!

I also found my first gold ring with the X-T 50 to read a solid '6', and the X-Terra's hit quite well on the smaller gold jewlery than many of the competitve brands I have used.

I would have preferred a shorter lower rod (but I can order one now) and, like you, I like a rigid coil rather than one that flops. I do hunt with my coil the recommended

Bill,

Thanks for all your help in deciding which model would fit me best. You were right on the money.

It's bee a long time since I had so much fun with a new detector. Finding that ring made it real fun! I will probably give that one to the grand daughter. That way she can lose it for someone else to find. HaHa.

Thanks again,

Harold

I have the 7.5 and the 18kHz coils and neither of them move once tightened up.

Perhaps you have to m,uch strength in your arm and swing hard.?:shrug:Jerry.
