The snow I woke up to Friday morning melted, and the clouds broke for awhile so I was able to get out after all. I got to the site about 1:30 in the afternoon and got to hunt until 3:00.
I decided to use it like a tone machine, and not pay to much attention to the numbers. The first place had a lot of interference. I started out with the Sens at 9 and the threshold at 0. I backed off the threshold until the meter got stable around 5, then lowered threshold and raised sensitivity until I could got it back up to 7 at a -50. I hunted this place for a bit, just getting a feel for it. I dug two bottle caps still attached to the neck of bottles finally dug a clad dime.
I moved over onto the manicured grounds and started reviewing my settings again. There was less electrical interfence here and I was able to get the sensitivity up to 8, and the threshold to -20. At this site, my first coin was a nickel at 4" and I spent alot of time fooling with pinpoint. I probe almost exlusively and its important to me to pinpoint well. With a widescan (DD) coil on my Golden, I can usually tap a coin within the first three probes, At the end of the hunt, I was tapping the coins within five probes, so I was feeling good about the pinpoint mode. I could also tell this is where all the battery drain is.
I found 3 clad dimes, one of which was on edge at three inches. 1 quarter, 3 copper lincolns, 1 '56 wheaty, my first for the year (I only found one for the whole year last year)and 4 zinc + the nickel.
Nothing was deep, but I felt good about the way it was working.
I had a thunderstorm passing to the north of me and another passing to the south, and at 3:00 the lighting was causing interfence. I had to lower the sens down to 2 and and threshold to a -80 to get it stable and decided to quit for the day.
I now have three hours on the machine, actually found coins and got to experience stabilizing the machine in a high electrical interference site. And got some time on the pinpoint mode. I am still uncertain about my sweep speed.
