First Weekend out with the Explorer...

Sat I hunted the park and I only got one wheat (1914 d) at about 7 in well mixed in the trashy area of the park. Sun I went to my friends old house out in the country, it was built in 1910 so I thought I would find some good stuff there. I only found 2 pennies 59 & 64 and lots of junk. Small iron (Bolts, nuts and nails) still fools me with the Explorer, sounds the same as silver. I keep a silver quarter with me just to keep my mind on what silver sounds like and I drop it and listen every now and then to keep the sound in my mind. I had my iron mask at -10 and went to -8 but stll found iron went to -6 and I still got iron. I didn't want to dig up my friends yard too bad. Then my probe broke and I just gave up! I hope I can get out some time this week after I fix my probe.
Old Ran

I still get fooled a lot too, but found running in ferous tones and running the iron mask at -12 helps a lot. I also have one of my programs set so it will have to whole top open untill where iron mask at a -14 would be,the rest is blacked out, then learn in the nickles for use in the real trashy areas.
One of the things I have learned a lot with the Explorer is to make sure it is a repeatable high tone by seeing where the target is and and get the target under the tip of the coil then you know where it is, now being you know where it is i will come at it from a differnt direction and see if it is still there in the same spot, may do this several times as if I can get it from more than one way I will dig, but if it nulls every way but one it is iron I have found.
Rick

Hey Randy, Rick is right about the iron, if it does not repeat in more then one direction in most cases it's iron, if it is a repeatable signal from more then one direction dig it.
Randy, I had the same problem when I first started out also, for the life of me I couldn't tell the difference betwen iron and silver then I hit a site that gave up a few silver dimes one day then bingo. I still get fooled now and then but most do, Ric told me once if you ain't digging a rusty nail now and then you are missing silver and he is right.
Carrying a quarter is a good idea Randy but I would say swap the quarter for a silver dime or carry both, my reason for that is there are more silver dimes out there then quarters, you have a better chance of your coil running over a dime more often then a quarter.
It's frustrating at first Randy so have patience, it's like anything else you do the more you do it the better you get at it and that day will come with the Explorer also, one day it's all gonna click and you will know what silver sounds like, cling cling. Keep digging Ran, painful at first but well worth it down the line, keep us posted bud, hh
Ray ~
