First Trip with CTX...Question on Find

Had a great time with this detector. I will post more finds, but my question concerns this necklace. It contains two clasps that are 925 Italy; however, when I found it, the detector signaled 12-28. Air tests display 12-21, 22, and 23. As I have no others means of testing other than the detector, any ideas? It is not magnetic but, as you can see from the poorly taken picture, it is tarnished. White gold? I dunno...

Thanks.

If it is silver, try cleaning with regular toothpaste, or baking soda. Should clean up nicely. Try making it into a ball and air testing it, that may show better numbers.

Most likely the detector is seeing each individual link and not them necklace as a whole. Silver number are typically higher but that is size dependent. For instance a silver dime will ring up lower than a silver quarter. If you're hunting for jewelry then you'll need to dig it all. Hope that helps. Also 925 stands for 92.5% silver. Looks like tarnished silver to me. Baking soda, hot water and tin foil will remove that. Look it up on YouTube.

Thanks. I know about the 925 but the 12-28 signal had me stumped. Thought that is in the gold range. I have always thought silver would register in the 11/12-46 to 49 range, especially coins. I suppose the links could be a factor.

I've had silver dimes (worn Mercs) come in as low as 12-38. Then I had a huge gold class ring come in as 12-42. If it's a solid signal that doesn't bounce around a lot, I dig it. Yes, there are certain signals that I can pretty much call what it'll be MOST of the time, but some signals are definitely odd...especially if you have multiple targets in the same hole or near each other. That can really affect the numbers.

As I am learning. Today was day one with the machine. Absolutely blown away with the performance. The necklace is a real treat. I see a 17 inch coil on the horizon as many targets were right on the fringe. I can only imagine what some additional depth will produce.
