I don't know if my X70 will ever replace my Sov or Excal or your Surfasplorer 
on the beach, but it sure comes in handy when I know I'll be primarily hunting the dry sand (high tide) where the X70 excels, or I just feel like swinging a lighter target ID detector for the day, which is often. If you feel like experimenting sometime, wander up to the dry sand and try the prospecting mode. You won't believe how many targets are really in that sand. It's VERY deep. You can always double check targets with patterns.
