First trip out with the new F70/F75 5" DD finds silver

I was visiting my parents over Easter weekend, and spent Monday hunting a spot I've wanted to hit for a while. During the 1860's early California settlers had an adobe here, and I was hoping it might be a good place to find 1800's Spanish or U.S. coins. The settlers had a conflict with the local Indians there, and had a battle with them (the settlers lost and were killed by the Indians).

I started off with the stock coil on the F70, but it was way too noisy. The ground at this location is volcanic soil and highly mineralized (I was getting three dirt bars on the F70, and ground balancing in the 40's), so I switched to the new little 5" DD coil. I had the sensitivity set to 50, threshold ~ +2 (I played around with the threshold quite a bit), disc set to 6, nothing notched, and ran the tones at 3H. There weren't a lot of targets (trash or otherwise), but I managed to find several black powder balls, a few relic do-dads, and a 1916S Mercury dime at about 4" depth (WHY COULDN'T IT BE A 1916D MINT-LOL!). I was a bit surprised to find the merc, it was the only coin I found at that location, even though the other relics were clearly mid 1800's.

Overall impressions of the new 5" DD - It was definitely a lot more quite then the stock F70 coil in this ground, and I thought it had good depth. While playing with the settings, I was doing various air tests and it was air testing to around 8", pretty good for this tiny coil. It wasn't a trashy area, so I can't say yet how well it does in trash or iron yet, but it did better in the volcanic mineralized soil then the stock F70 coil. I have an area that's a bed of square nails that'll really be a true test for this coil and the F70.

It'll take me the rest of my life to hunt this area with this little hockey puck, but it's a capable coil. I haven't compared it to the football coil yet, it would be interesting to see how the two of them compare in a head to head test.

Brian,
Always nice to find silver, to bad it was not a D. How do you feel the 5 ID'ed the targets, and was the Merc a good hit (sound wise) at that depth ? Thanks for the report on the 5, I use the 6.5, and find I prefer it to the stock coil. Thanks and HH

Thanks for the report Brian. I have the "football" coil, the stock coil, and the 11'' DD for my F70. There's a huge diffence in the concentric coils and the DD for this machine, at least in my tough ground. I've only used the football coil once and pretty much leave the big DD on. I love the smoothness that the DD affords. I would like to see a head to head comparison of the little eliptical football coil and the 5'' DD. Might just have to spring for one if there's a big difference.

Here's pics of the hunt I did with the 5" DD on the F70:

Mike I felt the 5" DD did a good job ID'ing targets. I found 4-5 mini-balls, and after getting a couple of them I could tell when I hit another before digging. They'd hit around the mid 40's, and were a good solid hit. The merc hit hard, I was pretty sure I had a coin when it hit, it just had that "coin" sound. I've come to the realization that the F70 is just a noisy machine, it's just a matter of discerning the good noises from the junk noises. Maybe the guys that hunt with 2 tones are on to something (less mental discrimination).

Next trip up north I'll hit the same spot but with the 6.5" coil to get a feel for how it handles the soil vs the DD. I'd sure like to find an earlier coin there, I think I'm in the right spot with all the mini-balls I was finding.

Brian

I'll definitely test both coils soon. Unfortunately my workgroup was given layoff notices today :ranting:, so until I find another position I'll have plenty of time to detect.

There's a really trashy park not far away, which although not old (built in the 1940's) I'm sure has to have some silver hiding amongst the trash. I plan to hit it sometime later this week, so I'll try both coils and report back.
