First trip out with the Excal II

Went out with my Son for a few hours today. We hit three different parks. Our big find ? Nails , pull tabs , shotgun shellcaps, scrape wire. Mostly stuck to pinpoint mode. I need to experiment with the disc mode , and write down the settings. Also need to learn to pinpoint better. Need my Garrett pro pointer to get here ! We were bummed , not a single coin ! I want to hit the beach , but it's a couple hours drive to a big beach. Still waiting for my RTG scoop to arrive. Anyway , love the machine. Just wanna start finding some good stuff ! Got a Tesoro Compadre coming for the Boy , and a Fisher F2 coming for my Daughter. Next week should be fun ! Today was the first day of my three week vacation. NICE !

the beach is a whole lot easier to learn at... easy digging, usually less mineralization, and more targets.... also at the beach most people dont bother taking the time to pinpoint because the digging is so easy.....i prefer hunting in disc mode with the disc dial set very low ,like 1 or 0.... then just dig all repeting signals ..... really doesnt matter how you hunt as long as you enjoy have a good time...

Made my first beach trip today ! Just a small local beach in Crystal River. Found my first coins metal detecting since I was 12 years old ! LOL , only found 18 cents and a handfull of trash in about 2 hours time. But had the most fun I've had at a beach in a long time ! I forgot to tape my scoop handle , so I ended up with a black hand. Also found a Chucky Cheese token. Awesome !

If you are hunting the parks in the keys you must remember that they were constructed using fill which would pretty much cover anything old. I hunted Key West and Marathon parks in the 70's and it was tough hunting even back then-tons of iron and other junk. IMHO stick to the water

try getting the ear training cd, itll jelp on the learning curve...

Hey John,
Yeah , I might need to try something like that. I basically only dig strong tones , ignore the nulls ( unless it comes back with the low growl ) which it hasn't yet. LOL. Nulls that come back higher or the same are junk right ? And I really need to work on the pinpointing.

Save your $35.00 and glue a nickel to the inside toe of your left boot if you are right handed-that is the only tone you really want to hear...... DIG IT ALL
