First time with Exc 2 1000 in fresh shallow water

Hey guys and girls,

tomorrow is going to be my first time out with this new machine which was delivered yesterday.

I'm going to be hunting a lake known for numerous small lost gold targets, about 1-2 grams small rings etc.

What advice can you give me about the settings ?

I was thinking about using max sensitivity (or slightly decreased one), max volume.

the most important question: to hear these small deep targets, do I run it in the disk mode ? someone advised me to run in pinpoint and to dig EVERY tagret including the iron. Iron objects in the lake are not that numerous, there is much more foil etc garbage in the water.

Can a small gold object which is buried deeper in the sand give an iron signal which could be ignored in disk ?

Start out in Disc. Threshold barely audible Sensitivity at 1 o'clock(5) Volume as loud as you can stand it set the Disc. on 1. This should get you started. Now your threshold will change tones when the coil goes over a ferrous target or null if the target is IRON don't worry about that. You can swing your scoop close to the coil and the threshold will change back. Don't swing your coil too fast and you should do fine. If you have some gold jewelery to test with do that before you go hunting. A nickle sounds very close to a gold signal also. Targets will come don't get discouraged. It takes awhile to learn the different tones for different metals but take your time. In my opinion you have the best water machine you can get. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions there are some very knowledgable people on this forum that will be glad to help you. HH :minelab:

thanks!

but my real question remains: how well does excalibur distinguish between iron an non iron targets ?

my old primitive ace 250 would sometimes indicate a non ferus item however when dug out it would change tone to

in another words, imagine there is a gold ring 10" in the sand, is there a chance the excalibur would "think" its iron since the ring is small and deeply buried ?

I haven't had that problem. I have hunted in all metal and have found some very deep iron. When I switched to disc it would null out but would give me a good deep reading in pinpoint, it was iron. I have yet to find a ring that read iron but don't know if anyone else has....HH

i did well last fall at a fresh water lake which had been drawn down exposing the swimming area.... my settings for that beach was sensetivity-at 12 oclock, discrim- at 0 volume-adjust to your liking,, i hunted in discrim mode which helped avoid many many bobby pins..... but when hunting for gold you have to be willing dig any and all repeating signals......using these settings i was able to find 2--gold braclets, 1--gold chain,, and many gold earings over the course 5 saturdays... many of the earings barely made a sound and were very hard to pinpoint .... most of the people more experienced than me will tellyou pinpoint -allmetal is the best mode to hunt in ,which it probably is if you have lots and lots of patience ... i prefer to use disc mode ... good luck..

Also, don't EXPECT to START FINDING G-O-L-D your 1st TIME OUT, unless your very lucky!! BEST OF LUCK, Les Robinson

To answer your real question NO the Excal will not mistake gold for iron or iron for gold. Stay in Disc. until you get some time on the machine. In Disc. the machine nulls on ALL iron objects.
