First time with ACE250

I finally made it out Sunday to a school yard beside my mother-in- laws house. Found one penny (1982) and a bunch of trash. Good thing the penny wasn't valuable as I ran my digging tool across the face of it while digging. They suggest using all metal mode for the first 10 hours, but you get so much junk. I couldn't resist to keep putting it on coin and watch the junk light up the detector and skip over it. I will keep it on all metal until I get used to it so I don't pass up a good piece of jewelry.

The FREE tool that Garrett's gives you with the purchase of the ACE250 only lasted for an hour, broke at the handle. Have the Gator tool coming today along with a better pouch and additional coil arm for the sniper coil. That thing is amazing!!!

I am going Saturday to a 100+ year old home site that was just torn down to make way for a new subdivision. I want to get in there before they pave or build over the area around where the house was. We live in a small town West of Charleston, WV. (A lot of civil war history here)

As you can tell I am hooked!!! My wife said this is something you do when you retire not when you're in your forties. I said well look at it this way when I find you a $5000.00 ring then let's see what you say.

Like you, I live in a small town. Not far from you (Inez,KY). I'm still looking for that diamond ring, the closest I've come to it was a 10 K Mothers ring with 7 stones. But I look mostly for relics, the coins etc is just an extra bonus. I've just aquired the Ace 250 this summer and seem to use it more than my other detectors (Garrett ADS II and Whites 5900 Di). The little yellow fellow goes with me ever where I go just in case I run into an old home site and get a chance to swing it a little. I dig every good signal. I've dug my share of tabs and junk but its the mystery of what it is that gets you, You don't know until you dig it. If nothing else I'm doing my part in cleaning up the environment (I take all dug junk to the trash dump). Keep swinging and digging and the good stuff will come along too. The Ace loves coins, especilly copper ones. The only problem is the acid from coal around here likes to eat on copper. Get yourself a good brass probe and a pinpointing probe. They makes the task of recovering a little easier. This hobby is great and rewarding and fun too. Like deer hunting (Buck Fever), I get excited every time I get a good signal, Probably called Tector' Fever.

:canadaflag:I too just started this hobby and lovin' it. My machine is an Ace 250 and have found coins, junk, a few trinkets and my 1st. (today) a copper bracelet! Living in Canada we have those loonie/toonie coins and the Ace loves 'em. I've been out each day for the past month since buying it. Practice, practice and practice some more. I'm still HOT/COLD at pinpointing, good days/bad, but it's all in the fun and fresh air. There's alot of good advice on this forum/support and ALL age groups. You'd be surprised! Keep a good supply of batteries onhand when hunting. Nothing more frustrating than a good signal~dead battery!

Get to know your signals by ear rather than relying on the display. If I hadn't been intune with the various coin signals I'd have missed a hole with 2 loonies, a penny and a bottle cap. These broken signals can also mean good stuff~not trash. It's happened to me 3x this week alone. Got into a little "honey pot" each time! Good luck.

To build up some good endurance and skills to last you into your 50's, 60's, 70,'s, 80's, 90's and maybe till you break 100 :)

I bet when you find the first gold ring, and your wife snitches from you, she will appreciate they hobby much more for you.

Just get out there and hunt! The skills to detect come with practice....we have all been there.

Yea, I got one of those "one hour" diggers with mine too..
I don't think those are Garrett though..They are shipped
by the dealer..The one they gave me was made in China and
lasted about the same amount of time as yours..
I went over to home depot and got a better one that will
never break. It also has a handy ruler scale on the blade..
As far as coins, I use a homemade probe for those. Does
much less damage in general, and also is faster usually
once you get used to popping them up out of the ground.
I made the probe from a long screwdriver that I ground the
tip down on. My first coin probe was a pushrod from an
engine. It works real well, but I wanted one with a handle..
In this picture, you can see how I ground down the tip on
the screwdriver to match the ones on the pushrod. I polished
it down real smooth. It rarely marks a coin unless you really
gouge into it. Most of the time it just kinda glides over it.
