First time out

I'm pretty sure I had a bit of beginner's luck tday, but I went out with my detector for the first time in years after having only used it a couple times after I first bought it in 2001 and then it ended up in my closet for several years.

I dug it outwith the idea that I really needed to start finding activities away from my computer and I thought that getting into using my metal detector would be a step in the right direction.

I went to a park not far from home it use to have an elementary school and a playground on property, but is now a public park on half the property and the other half is a small grocery store, so I thought since it is a heavy traffic area and with it having been a school property the odds of finding something would be in my favor.

I left with an empty pocket and came back with

-- 4 pop tabs (newer ones that are typically conected to the can)

-- 1 quarter (1999)

-- 3 dimes (1979 to 2004)

-- 1 penny 2003

a hand full of gum wrappers that oddly register as nickle instead of aluminum like I would have thought they would I poked around and dug but couldn't get any kind of signal after I picked up the gum wrappers so I'm pretty sure they were registering as nickle

Oh and I found one hub cap or inner wheel off of what I can only guess is a matchbox sized truck

I was only out for maybe an hor but it's kind of cold ad damp today so it wasn't the most comfortable weather for me with arthritis, but the soft ground was nice in terms of digability.

Thinking about going out again tomorrow unless it's thundering. It's suppose to be a little warmer so it will work better for me physically.

I found this forum by accident and it looks like there are lots of tips in it for using detectors so I've been reading a little here and there the past few days and thought I would post about my little finds from today.

Sounds like a good start. You may want to get a cheap nail apron, so you don't have to put your finds in your pocket. Rusty nails and other nasty stuff are part of the game.

A good start to the hobby.'
Wait till you find your first ring.

Not a bad start...definitely get yourself some kind of web belt and a pouch, or a 2 or 3 pocket nail apron...

The day I started this thread, I had gone out with a hand trowel, and my detector. I wised up a little bit on the second day and took a plastic bag with me. The third day I used key clips to carry my plastic bags but to be honest I fear I looked like a bag lady of some sort so I'm really liking the idea of a nail apron a LOT. will definitely track one down this week.

Day 2 I found 11 cents and it started thundering so I headed for home.

Day 3

I found 6 US pennies, 1 Canadian penny, 1 US quarter, 2 US dimes, and a weird piece of foam I want to disect and figure out why my metal detector sensed it. I can set my detectoron a table and wave this weird piece of foam across the coil and every time it shows up as "coins".

I also liked the idea someone had some place else in the forums for giving pop tabs to McDonalds, so I modified a broken shoe lace I found and am using it as a storage device for pop tabs, when the lace is full I'll empty it into a plastic bag and turn them in.
