First time out.

After trying to enter the hobby for the last few years, even buying detectors and selling them
without being used, I got out for the first time this past Friday. I took the GT to a park in
Baltimore. I really didn't have much of an idea what I was doing, and had some trouble
pinpointing (forgot to put the GT in pinpoint mode). I was there for about 3 hours. It was
hard work and I could hardly get out of bed the next day. I didn't find anything special. I thought
I had something when dug the East India coin and the ring. I had a lot of fun, and have a lot to learn.

Anyone would be happy with that result. I think you have a good ear for the detector. You said you had no previous experience and didn't mention having a coach. I am impressed with your finds. If you go back and read a lot of the earlier posts here I think you will find that the most consistent advise given to new Sov owners is to swing the coil slower. It looks like you are off to a great start. I hope you are conducting yourself in a responsible manner, mainly how you dig out the finds. Leave the area as if you hadn't been there. I recommend digging in your own yard first. This will give you the opportunity to observe the long term results of your digging holes. Best to you, Mike.

I cut 3 sided plugs and put the dirt on a towel. I had to dig into the sides of the hole
because of the trouble pinpointing I had, but I put the dirt on the towel so I could get
it back into the hole. I was extra careful in filling my holes. I did read a lot about the
GT, but I guess I forgot it in the excitement of getting out for the first time. I bought
8" coinsearch coil, so I'll try that next time. I also bought Clive's book.

Hi, Can you please give me the exact name and publisher of " Clive's book" that you mentioned in passing. I have a Sovereign GT and want to learn more about how to use it. In the UK in the New Forest in Hampshire.
