First I need to get something off my chest...ARGH THEM NAILS!!!!
Must've dug 5 or 6 today. One or two rang solid high tone, the others bounced between high coin and iron. Any tips on avoiding the nails????
Also noticed that (as was suggested earlier) I had to keep my sensitivity on 2. When I pushed it to 4 it falsed all over the place. There were power lines nearby, but they never gave me trouble with my Excel.
My setting were sensitivity 2, nothing notched out, volume 4, ID mode, ground balaced by bobbing (balanced to around 4).
Only coins were a modern nickel and a late 70's memorial penny.
Thanks for the advise in advance.

CZ's get maximum penatration at 4 and it shouldn't until to raise it up to 6. Also CZ's aren't known to be sensative to electrical interference as is the Coinstrike.
The only way to avoid nails with a CZ is don't dig them, which is almost impossiblem with a CZ because they love rusty iron and commonly through it up in a high coin tone.
So up that sensativity to 4 and slow that swing speeed down and you shouldn't have a problem with falsing.
HH,
Mike

Most areas let you run your sens. at 4 however your area may be highly mineralized or those power lines may be doing a job on you as its a powerful unit. Even at low sensitivity should get good depth. Might read over the ground balance again as if set slightly positive could prevent you reaching 4 with sens. and a stable machine..Looks easy for ground balancing but a newbie may could not be fine tuning it.
I think we have beat this nail thing to death so do go to this site as Mike and myself have been using a CZ since 92 and should give you tips to avoid them.
http://mikewd.fws1.com/...will gladly accept an E-mail for a specific question. In reallity a user friendly unit and time in the field will quickly have you on track..

Tip on the nails and iron in general
Keep your sweeps slow smooth and level, once you find the right sweep speed most of the iron falses will be gone. The CZ circuitry is very sweep speed sensitive when working in iron, sweep too fast or make choppy sweeps and it will false and drive you nuts.
Other than chasing iffy signals at pounded sites, the only nails I dug with the CZ5 were ones laying horizontal in the ground which tend to false high off one end. Most of them will be in the side of the hole because of where the signal pinpoints. If you get a strong high coin hit and haven't recovered anything by 8", check the side of the hole.

I was thinking that parts of the same nail were giving the coin signal, while other parts gave iron signals. Hence the coin/iron bounce. Still, if passing up coin to iron bounces, seems that you might miss coins next to iron.
Just a thought?

I just realized that Mike W. is the guy I got my ID Excel from (last year)- traded an Explorer. Talked to him on the phone...really nice guy.

Hey Wayne, I would definitely recommend, that you get yourself a SunRay FZ-1 In-Line Probe. It will cost you $179, FREE SHIPPING, depending on where you purchase it. Ron's Dixie Detectors in MISS., has FREE SHIPPING, and I know there are other dealers also. Ron's DIXIE DETECTORS is also a GREAT GUY to deal with, and one of the FINDMALL FORUM Sponsors. The In-Line Probe works off your CZ Detector Batteries, and gives you the multi-tone ID of the particular CZ, that you are using. So, that if the hole has 2 or more targets in it, you can find the good targets vs. iron targets (if there were nails or other iron targets in the same hole). Also, it is interchangable with ALMOST ALL of the CZ Detectors. Best of luck, hh, NamVetLesTreasureSeeker
