First time out with the ATP and a question about coils.

Searched a very promissing older baseball field but only found 2 small toy cars and some can slaw at 4". I like the tones a lot. The machine balances very well with the 9" concentric coil. Fairly easy to use. Last night I spent a few hours watching most of the videos on Garrett's web site and reading the manual 3 times........

Now for the $64,000 question. I am using the 9" concentric. Would the 11" DD give better target separation? I vote for the concentric....

For target seperation a dd coil is better due to it's narrower search path the 5x8" DD coil is awesome in trashy areas. The concentric may get a little more depth but not much more than the 5x8" DD coil. What did your machine ground balance at the site you were hunting?

A lot depends on the machine. Not all machines have better target separation just because they use DD coils. I'm still experimenting. So far the 6.5"X9" concentric is doing fine.

Tests will be done when I have time.

Oh, I think it ground balance a bit positive at about 75. I like it slightly positive.

Just from my experience the DD coils on the AT series machines seemed to pick through the trash and iron better but my ground is hotter than yours, the AT-Pro I had always ground balanced out between 85-88 in my soil so that may be why the DD coils suite my type of hunting better. I used to use concentric coils on another machine I had cause they didn't offer a DD for it.I went back to this site using a AT-Pro with a 5x8" DD and I found quite a few coins with nails in the hole that the other machine had obviously missed due to the nails being so close to the coin. I don't know if this was due to the DD coil or a faster processor in the Pro or not, but one things for sure the AT-Pro is a very capable machine at finding the goods in trashy spots.

I run DD's exclusively with no trouble in the trash...I have the 11"dd on my pro...seems the very center of it acts like some sort of sniper coil if you hover it and gently pick your way through...multiple targets under the coil sound off individually...I run iron audio off in real heavy trash... .I have not tried a concentric, so I really dont have any experience if one is better than the other, just wanted to say the stock dd seems to be working fine for hunting trash...Glad to see you got out!:clapping:

Although I don't run a concentric coil on my A T Pro, I have on other units and always found on any moderate to heavily trashed site like parks and school yards that double D coils pick through trash considerably better then concentric coils. Although DD's like rusty bottle more so then a concentric does, they are really easy to tell in most instances with the A T. Personally, I would rather have and use a smaller DD coil then a concentric of any size for heavily trashed sites. But, I have also learned and use what works best for me for my type of hunting, Good luck with the A T Pro. It is a real coin killer and is right up there with the more expensive units for hunting relics in iron infested sites. HH jim tn

John you give the AT time you will eventually click with it! Trust me I bought one shortly after they fixed the glitches with the originals and I absolutely hated the machine and sold it. Later on I got to watching you tube videos and realized I was setting the machine up wrong for my hunting needs and decided to buy another one along with the 5x8" DD coil. It was one of the best moves I ever made!! Since then I upgraded to the AT-Gold due to it being a little better on lower conductors like brass and lead cause I mainly relic hunt but there's times I like hunting for old coins and these AT'S will find them quite well.
