First Time Out With MXT...

First time out with White's MXT proved little in the way of treasure...Hunted for about 1 1/2 hours in Atlantic Beach, NC. I unearthed a single zinc penny of which I couldn't distinguish the date or even the two faces (saltwater did a number on it). I did end up leaving the beach with about $45.00 worth of treasure for the day; I found a $45.00 pair of flip-flops so it was worth the while. I was experimenting with the different settings so I wasn't really banking on finding too much of anything with value...

Finds for 04/21/05:
1 Clad Penny
Loads of pull tabs/cans
1 Pair of flip-flops
1 fence post cap
Loads of rusted out iron items

No worries I will learn this detector soon enough...until then happy hunting and God Bless...

Hi Tadam84,

The MXT is a little different breed of cat. The threshold has a lot more chatter than most machines. But, it WILL find good targets. In fact, the MXT is one of only a few machines that will find small link gold chains.

There is an article written by Chris Ralph that can help you hit the ground running with your MXT. It is actually a list of 27 questions and answers that every MXT owner should read at least once. It is titled "MXT Frequently Asked Questions". The following is a link to it.

Wishing you good luck

Thanks for the info, i had read about that website a couple days ago and I definitely got right to it and printed those out. I went to my mom's house today and messed around pinpointing and stuff and it ran a lot smoother (a yard without a lot of trash). Found a few clad coins and some old bottle caps with a bit of old rusted out nuts and stuff. Pinpointing is getting a lot better this second day out, only hunted a lil bit in between helping my ma get the plants out of the greenhouse.
Thanks again for the website...

Glad to hear things are coming together. The more time you spend detecting, the easier things will become.

Those rusty crown bottle caps have continued to be a problem for me ..... they ring as quarters. However, pinpoint them and then swing fast directly over them ..... they will still often show as a quarter but the sound will have a sputter. If the sound stays solid, it probably is a quarter.

Something I had real problems with when I first got my MXT was ear splitting high volume when pinpointing a shallow target. As I turned the gain, SENS, up into the plus area the problem got even worse. The problem was eliminated when I got a good set of headphones with a "limiter circuit". The headphones have a toggle switch that allows the limiter circuit to be turned on and off. When you start turning your gain up you will discover what I am talking about.

Hope you got an electronic pinpointer when you got your MXT. They make locating a target a LOT easier.

Which headphones are you using Bob? Rob

I use the Killer B's Wasp. Have read some posts that said the Wasp model does not work on an MXT. Don't understand that because mine work great. When I turn the limiter on, the quiet and midrange signals stay the same but the super loud signals get much quieter.

They seem to be rugged and they are comfortable.

Great find on the Flip-Flops. Where you searching in the all leather or rubber mode? It is amazing what you can find sometimes. I am still learning my MXT and when I am sure I have found the "motherlode" I usually pull out a lead wheel weight or license plate. One piece of advise that I have read on the board that has helped me is to search in Relic mode, set the Disc to 2, set the ground trigger to lock, listen for the high tones, ignore the low tones and dig anything with a positive number on the VDI. My finds have more then doubled doing this. Happy hunting. Bruce
