first time out with mxt

UK mxt user. Tried out my new mxt for the first time yesterday on a local farm.
Noisy little thing...but the field was loaded with iron (and i mean loaded !!) Still, i managed to pull out some ok stuff including a georgian halfpenny which was in a hole with a large piece of iron! Must say though that the meter readings were jumping all over the place, but maybe this was due to all that iron??
I was using 10x5 DD coil in relic mode with trigger in centre and ground balance in ground position(but pushed forward when the iron noises got too bad). Gain was as high as i could put up with i.e.
+ 1. I wonder if running the ground balance in the lock position would have helped? Very impressed with this machine overall but not sure about the meter readings - maybe they will be more accurate on a less contaminated site?

I took mine out yesterday to a park. The target ID was right on. If it said quarter, it was a quarter. I dug all pull tabs even though it said that's what they were. Ground was 59, and stock coil was used.

To help with the noise a bit, GB on a clean piece of ground and then lock the setting. Also, on such bad ground, cutting down on the gain a little will help you get a better reading. Of course, when you have multiple targets under the coil, the mxt will give you a VDI reading that bounces some.
You'll find the mini-shooter and or the 5.3" coil very helpful in such trashy sites. HH

the GB 'locked' about 95% of the time.
Yes, the MXT can be a noisey critter, to be sure, but all the iron is part of the reason, I am sure. The TID with jump around a lot if:

Paul--
I think you said you're in Wales. I'm not sure how conditions are there compared to where I've hunted twice in Essex, but there in those big fields, besides iron and lead and the occaisional aluminum [aloomin-eeumm ], there is a load of coke that sings out like iron & the hot rock that it is. I tend to turn down the threshold until almost gone, ground locked and keep it in the positive gain area, disc at 2 to 3 max with the trigger forward in relic (helps limit tones to the higher and more of a broken low tone, if any for iron, etc. IF iron and coke is not as common, I'd run without disc and the trigger forward to get that nice two tone separation.
I tried a 14 inch EXcelerator and found just to many signals per inch! I could take a lot of time and separate them most of the time, but I felt like I wasn't moving at all. I think the 10x6 elliptical is my primary coil and the 9.5 should do well to cover a bit more area, but not quite as good on separation.
Try holding a coin and a piece of iron of similar or even bigger mass in front of the coil with balance locked (a neccessity for air test) and play with all the combinations and I think you'll like what you see. The iron is not much of a problem. I've found good stuff within an inch of iron.
Six weeks to go and I'll be hunting there again--it's the best!
BUT I still hate the coke!! And really like traveling in Wales.
If you want to discuss anything else- feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
Think I'll try locking the GB next time out and see if that makes things more stable on my iron infested sites. Trouble might be finding a bit of 'clear' ground to do this !!
ps to Nevada Gary - I'm in Manchester,UK which is in England but is pretty near to Wales. Getting hammered/roman stuff is not quite so easy up here as for those living in Essex and the south of the UK generally. Stuff from the late 1700's/early 1800's comes out quite regularly on most of my sites though..

Paul,
You would be suprised at the noise you'll cut back on by running the gain on 10. or even dropped back to 9. The plus numbers are like amplifiers, true they may help you hear a target a little deeper but running a gain of 9 with the stock coil 6-8 inch coins were no problem. I have found the + numbers to be very noisy to say the least and in a super trashy area the + numbers only add to the noise of the trash. Also in relic mode try running the disc on 2 and puch the trigger forward, most iron is silenced and all else has a high tone therefore you only have to listen for the high tones. The excellerator coils do a great job in trash also, never had the chance to try one against the 10x5 but know it blows the stock coil away.

GROUND BALANCE & THEN PUT TOGGLE IN LOCK
POSITION. GET THE SMALLER ELL. COIL; YOU WILL BE AMAZED. ALSO CONSIDER SMALLER CONCENTRIC.

ALSO TRY RUNNING YOUR THRESHOLD BACK INTO THE SILENT AREA. EXPERIMENT WITH THIS AND SEE HOW FAR BACK YOU CAN RUN IT & STILL PICK UP DEEPER SIGNALS. THIS WILL ALSO ALLOW YOU TO RUN MORE GAIN; BUT I'D FIRST TRY BACKING OFF THE GAIN BECAUSE YOU MIGHT PICK UP GOODIES CLOSER TO LARGE IRON.
