First Time Out With ID Excel (long)

Had planned to take the ID out to a school and try it out, but a buddy called and wanted to go hunt a 1920s house. I had only palyed with the ID for about 20 minutes, so I was hesitant. No way was I going to turn down the opportunity. The ground was like concrete so we only spent about 40 minutes at the site. Ended up with a 1907 IH penny, 4 wheats, a dropped .577 Enfield and a 14k gold child's ring w/o the stone. My buddy found more coins, including a 1914 D Barber quarter, but I was pretty happy.

That's pretty respectable right there! Coins are nice, and I think often times we measure our success by the number of coins we find, but to me that's not what makes a successful hunt. It's kind of like golf..........If I don't break any clubs or turn the cart over, I've had a GREAT day! :yikes: Sounds like you are getting off to a good start with that Excel! Give the place a good going over again.....I'll bet there's another keeper or 2 in there.

Thanks Tony, We plan on going back this weekend. All the rain should soften up the "concrete" a little. I need to get more familiar with the ID before then. I passed on a lot of bouncing signals due to the ground/grass situation. I did not want to dig and risk killing the grass for an iffy target. Also, just got my SunRay Probe. Can't wait to try it.

so don't you worry, you just write away. Any day I find an IH, just one, is a good day.

With the Excel, the Honeymoon never ends, she just gets better as you get to know her. Once you get some miles on her, then take her into a really trashy area, it's like having a bodyguard. Make sure to invite others with high buck super gizmo machines, thats when the fun will really begin! As you casually say "why I'm not having any problems with iron or nails".

Will it look thru nails? No, but just a wee bit to the side, no problem.

I will have to remember that or how about," Nails? You're finding nails?" - said while looking very concerned "
That was a problem with this site, lots of junk as with most older houses. My inexperience with the ID caused a lot of confusion and false signals. When we go back, I will probably go with the FP setting.
