First time out with Fisher 1236X2

Woodchuck

New member
Been meaning to get out with the Fisher 1236x2 since I got it,but its just to dang hot.Well I got out this morning out door by 5:40 am and walked to park next door.Had to wait a little for it to get light enough to set control knob settings.Started out at a little swing lot with woodchip mulch.Set sensitivity at 10 the only setting that gives you a slight audio threshold.Disc was at 8 preset,Silencer off,Volume at 3,frequency at 0 preset.First solid signal was quarter,I said to myself thats a good start.I liked the audio setting ,as you pass over ground you here a crackling sound, non targets come in as a light pop pop sound to me while the good targets are a solid beep.To me the audio threshold setting sounds like the noise rice crispies makes as you add milk.I diidn't find it anoying.I kept volume low I was using head phones. The Quarter and dimes and pennies hit solid. As I was at swing area the parks guy stopped,he was emptying the trash containers.I said to myself I'm in trouble now,the rule is there is no park laws or rules againt metal deteecting but your not allowed to dig or disturb the ground in any shape or form etc.Anyhow he comes up to me and asks what kind of metal detector I was using etc.He was actually interested in metal detecting,so we chit chated for awhile and I offered to take him metal detecting. He was pretty cool about it ,turns out he was the weekend guy,and wants to try MDetecting.Well right after he left, some big teenagers came over and desided they wanted to mess a round on swings. So needless to say I moved on they were rowdy and loud and looked like trouble.I said to myself I might as well try the baseball field. There was nothing on the diamond. So I checked out the open grass field as i decided to leave. As i.m leaving i get a solid signal and dig up a quarter .As i put plug back down in place my detector beeped again next to plug i just dug.i said theres something else there, and sure enough I pulled out another quarter.I learned a lesson on that one. My last dig as I was walking out of the park was a dime, that hit good. And as I was putting it away I still had my earphones on and heard constant crackling..I looked up and over head electrical transmission lines were not even ten feet away above me.And the fisher was getting interference. Yet it still picked up that dime in ground,I thought that was pretty neat.So all in all I'm pretty happy with my first non whites metal detector and my first plain fisher no bells and whisles. My take for today.a 90,94,06,quarters a 84,06,dimes,and 08,70,72,85 pennies a whooping total of 99 cents and one mangled zerk fitting.Hey its a start ! LOL

the preset 8 is for coins it will not get the nickles like that....I am sure you do know that just thought I would pass it along...the 1236 was like a multi purpose unit but geared for comp hunting and the coins at the comp hunts are usually planted silver and that's the reasoning behind the 8 setting...

I notice you stated slight thresh at 10... was you in a relatively E.M.I. free zone?

I know mine will get a thresh barely at 10 when I am deep woods or on a beach somewhere but usually it starts to get a sizzle at around 8 to 8.5 and by 10 it's pretty raspy and falsing...No big deal either way...as long as you get some sizzle...I have seen a few that will not sizzle on top end and they need a minor tweak to get the right...

I have mine set up pretty dang hot on top end and it's a joy to use...I tuned it in a deep woods environment that was as R.F. free as I could get and it is a hot joker for sure!!!

But they all are pretty close and are fantastic trash machines... Maybe the best I have ever seen personally...

Glad you had fun!!!

I had the 1236x2 before and although I knew it was a great machine, I traded it. My buddy with his xterra 70 was really impressed with my finds before and never understood why I got rid of the machine.
I usually hunt farmfields and now on most fields are still wheats or corn or other crops. Yesterday we found a field where they took the crops off last week but still had 5 inch of stubble so we had to swing the coil high. I had my new 1236 with 10'5 coil. Had sens at 9/10 volume at 6 and in iron disc. I love this machine and sometimes even remind me of my old 1266. I got deep items and although the finds were not that great, I was amazed with the performance of my new 1236x2. We tested it again with the tesoro cortes and the xterra 70 but the 1236 won again. It has a very strong response for sure. I am glad I got rid of the minelab explorer. The minelab is still a great machine but the slow recovery drives me nuts.

Good luck with your future hunts.

Eric. Holland.

p.s i never use the silencer as i love those spitting sounds that let me know where the iron trash is.
