I finally got a chance to try out the Excalibur 1000 I grabbed off Craigs List last week.
I thought the best way to test it out would be to go to a site I am very familiar with. One that I know what the trash signals sound like and what a good target sounds like.
I must say I was impressed with the Excal. I ran it with the Sensitivity around 11:00. Any more and it seemed to null out if I swung too fast. I was quickly able to learn what the different tones of good targets vs. foil. I got a bit nervous because after an hour I got a "pop" sound and the unit shut down. I simply checked the collar around the battery pod and it came back and was fine after that.
I did not find any very deep targets but the small button was more than 5 inches deep and had a solid tone. All of these buttons had good solid tones, but I noticed when one was buried on edge it sounded like two separate targets.
It is still a bit heavy even with the over/under rod, but not nearly as bad as the stock S rod.
No coins, but I did find a few nice 18th & 19th century buttons, a thimble, part of a shoe buckle(?) and a cool ESSO service thingy.
I can't wait to hit The Shore with it!
