Practice pinpointing over a coin on the surface, then taped under a piece of cardboard. Try Xing in your normal disc mode, then again holding the pinpoint button. With practice you should be able to decrease the size of the X and get close enough to nearly always find the target easily. On my Prizm the pinpoint is just centered under the IV on the coil. Some times they'll be just off where you think they are in the edge of your hole or slit. Coins on edge or slanted may not pinpoint as accurately. Probing around the area that you've pinpointed with a thin probe you can often fouch the coin to locate as well.

Adam,
I don't know if this will help as I have the M6 and was running into same problem.I would get a solid and repeatable reading, pinpointed, got depth and dug w/ nothing. I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me.

The feedback I got form the forum was that larger objects like a can will actually be deeper than my depth reading. I have pinpointed what I thought to be a quarter at 3" only to find a can at 7" and to the side of my hole. Also, as BarberBill said, it can be off to the side and a good pinpointer is a must.
Hope this helps.
