First time out - spot checked a few locations.

Sunday was my first official time out (last Sun I poked for about 1/2 hr - few wheats).
First hit a field with little results. Second was a patially drained pond. TONS of trash!! My friend found 2 IHs and a 3-ringer bullet - I found clad and a live crawfish ( tossed him into the water - FREEDOM!!). Third was an older house with a small backyard. I found an interesting spoon - it's very long with a spiral shank. Maybe a fountain spoon? Also a small brass claw hammer - size of a tack hammer.
Fourth spot was an old "standby" field that I hit occasionally. Besides a couple small flat buttons I found an interesting token the size of a small cent.
One side says "millinery and fancy goods" and dated 1883. The other side around the edge says "New York Stores South Main St" and in the center says
"Waterbury Conn".

Neat token Bruce. I found one that looks the same but different store and it was 1864. Looks like you also scored some craw fish karma. HH my friend.

Neat finds - that 's a cool looking spoon. Your token is a Civil Was token and the date is actually 1863. There were three Civil War tokens issued by this merchant "New York Store" in Waterbury, Connecticut. The number (according to the Civil War Storecard book by George & Melvin Fuld) is CT 560A-2a. It has a rarity of R4 (between 200-500 are estimated to be in existence). Neat find - might be some seated or bust coins waiting for you in that spot. Just watch out for those crawdads.

TokenDigger, thanks for the info. My gut told me it was Civil War period but that "6" looked so much like an "8".
This ares has produced over 30 coppers (various LC, LC tokens, William & George half cents, US half cent, Russian 3 kopek, etc), but not much silver.
The silver has all been from the 30's-60's. Also from this area came a sword crossguard and parts of British and American Rev war helmet plates.
We've got it pretty well picked-over but sometimes I go back and work slow and come up with deeper, smaller targets.

Quarterslaughter - No question was asked about the hammer head. I simply stated that it was a small brass claw hammer the size of a tack hammer.

Not a bad start!
