FIRST TIME OUT, NO LUCK :(

hey all,

well it was my first time out on the beach this morning, found alot of trash in the dry sand. because i only had a trowel and not a sifting scoop i only persued targets down to 4". i tried going deeper but it was a nightmare. the wet sand? forget it, the detector was going off like there was a battle ship under the sand even with the sensitivity all the way down.

i found a handfull of small bits of foil and foil wrappers, batteries, bottlecaps, lighter, pulltabs and a nail.
the detector did well finding these, was easy to pinpoint, even the deep stuff i didnt persue.

i met Jeremy today, another guy out there detecting. he told me alot about what to expect out there on the beach.

i learned alot today on my 2 hour hunt of the beach. when im better prepared ill be back out there again.

GM New,
Are you speaking of a saltwater beach?
And what MD are you using?

Wet saltwater sand is tough for most all MD unless designed for it.

Sounds like you found plenty targets!
That's good.

If you consider the variable possibilities and composition of jewelry,
the targets you recovered could fall into the same range.

That is to say, if someone HAD dropped something, within the depth capability of your MD,
good possibility you would have found it.

Persistence will get you the gold!

im using a BOUNTY HUNTER PIONEER 202 that my brother gave me. it is real accurate and ive found alot of things with it but this was the first time at the beach. it is a salt water beach off the florida coast. im thinking of buying a aquavision pro, its a water proof md thati found on ebay. i would buy used but there hard to find in my price range. thanks for the info.

HEY 202
I ran in to you at the beach this morning , it was nice to meet ya , Don't get discouraged . Get yourself a nice sand scoop and you'll be fine, The one I'm using is in 90.00 range. there a little pricey But well worth it in the long run. Your md is fine for dry stuff. Just go out there and have fun.. and get the gold . Guzz1

Hey new202user, if this seems like something that you are going to want to pursue, then you need to start saving for a SOV GT or Excal. The SOV is not submersible, but much cheaper than the Excal. Both units will work excellent at the beach. SOV will work all the way to water's edge, but be careful not to get it wet. There is no comparison to what you have now at the beach, for depth stability and great finds, just something to think about. I would not consider your other selection you mentioned. The 2 units I mentioned work smooth, with no issues from the salt water environment and still have th ability to discriminate iron, but accept the rest. Good luck mate!

There's plenty of good stuff in the dry sand. The good thing is that if you are scoring pull tabs then, hey! You will be pulling gold as well when your coil crosses it. If you dig nickels and up, you will do fine.

I've had the big-ticket detectors several times since the early seventies. Right now I just have a Garrett Ace 250. I take that booger to mid-thigh and you know what? It pays for itself every so often!! It really does.

I'll be upscaling soon but until then, my attitude is, "If there's loot from mid-thigh to the grass, I'm gonna find it. You'll find a bunch more junk than you will find loot but just get ready. The treasure comes to those who are persistent and learn the machine they have...inside and out.

Whatever you do, get yourself a good sturdy sand scoop with a handle that's somewhere around 32" - 36" or so. It'll be a lot more comfortable for you and you will be able to cover more ground.

Just my two-cents worth. Now: Go get 'em, have a bunch of fun and remember that the true treasure in this hobby is not in the sand, but in the folks you meet along the way!!

Keep at it. It takes time, but as you gain more experience you will get better and have better days. Sometimes conditions dictate what you will find at the beach, such as if someone else was there with a detector recently or in the best case, after a storm.

This is a game where persistence pays. Keep swinging and you'll hit some good stuff. Also I have to constantly slow myself down It's like I'm always looking for a better spot than where I'm currently standing and then thats right where I find the gold. Also you need mojo. wish I could send some your way but I'm out myself. Digger might have some to spare HH,

It will pay for itself in the long run and you will be alot better off if you have to send in in for repairs for some reason go with one of the top three companys, fisher, minelab, garritt ect.

I started w/ a BH Quickdraw several years ago and became VERY frustrated on the beach, but is was a dream machine at the local parks. I've since bought a Garrett Ace 250 (great in the dry sand), Minelab Quattro and am taking delivery of an EXCAL on Wednesday. This has taken place over the last ten years (I have not hit the lottery, YET). I had the fortune of having a friend who loaned me his Excal for a few weeks and liked it soooo much I bought one myself..Larry (The Palm Bay Pirate):bounty::garrett::minelab:

Hi there, I have had some wonderful finds in the dry sand! My first gold ring was found in the dry sand, a princess cut .34ct Diamond on a W&Y gold band, appraised at $2,500. The 2 most important tips for using the BH on the beach is this: Keep a constant coil height at all times, and slow down your swing to between 5 or 6 seconds from left to right. I have found Gold jewelery, Silver jewelery, and many coins using the tracker IV on the wet sand, and the amount of these items found in the dry sand boggles the mind. It can be done quite easily if you follow the tips I have given you. Another tip I can give you is this: Instead of paying between $80-$100+ for a metal sand scoop, you can easily make your own using PVC drain pipe 95mm. The end cap can be drilled out, the pipe itself can be drilled, attach the end cap using plumbers pipe glue, just make sure the smallest coin cannot go through the holes. Attach a handle using stainless steel bolts and away you go. This makes a good scoop for the dry sand. All the best HH regards Nugget.:)
