first time on the beach

Heading for Ogunquit Maine in a week for a four day stay. I havn't tried the beaches in all the years i've been hunting. I visit this site all the time and some of you guys and gals just totally amaze me with your finds. So i figured i'd ask here for a couple of hints as to the where and when. I have an ExplorerII and Whites DFX and will try both to see what works best. Is the wet sand area better than the high and dry areas. And listening to Mike from Virgina sounds like acouple of hours either way of low tide will be best for hunting times.
I'll be staying at a motel on the water right at the begining of the beach. Any help from anyone that hunts this beach or beaches in general
will be greatly appreciated. This old Marine ground pounder is out of his element on or near water. :usmc::usaflag: Have a great 4th:thumbup:

I think the wet sand at low tide is where you want to be. And the hunt window of a couple hours before and a couple after works very well. As for the machine, I would take the Explorer and run it in IM-16 and manual sens at around 20 should do it. You might be able to run it a little hotter but it may false in the wet sand or shallow water if you do and will get plenty of depth at 18 to 20-ish. You definitely want to dig it all at the beach though, because the gold will be in the range of the aluminum trash. Good luck!

I agree with everything Mike said except that if you run at IM-16 you will hear everything including the iron. That is fine as it does make it easier to pick out the non-iron sounds but you don't need to dig the targets that read in the upper left corner of the Smartfind Screen as they always turn out to be Iron. Some small gold items can read on the lower left side of the screen. So you pretty much want to dig everything that doesn't read in the upper left corner. Good Luck on your first excursion into the wet sand. One word of warning.....if you find one or two gold rings you will probably be hooked on beach hunting like most of the rest of us here. The first time you see wet gold glistening in the bottom of your scoop you are doomed from then on :) :) :) :)

Yeah, I guess I should have clarified that. I didn't mean he should dig everything. Everything but iron. I just like to never lose my threshold when I hunt with my Explorer so I always run it in All Metal but then I dig what sounds good. Except iron. But I figured he knows the Explorer well enough to know that. Oh, and I should have said Ferrous tones too.

i knew you guys would come up with some helpful tips for this old land pirate. Will post what i find. Thanks :usmc:again! :usaflag:

I've had my explorer II for a few years and lost the user manual. How do you set the ferrous tones? Is it the fe coins setting?

No, you have to go into the menu options and hit the "Sounds" section.

If you need the manual you can get it here:

Thanks for the help. I downloaded the manual but still confused on how to set. Should I use a gold ring and a coin as the objects to set the tone? Or maybe a poptop and a ring?

We've spent many summers both in Ogunquit and Wells Beach. Be prepared to find a lot of sparkler wires. Since fireworks are legal there you'll find a lot of the used wires. Once you find one or two you will see that moving your coil will give you an indication that its something long and you won't bother digging them any more.

Aint it the truth!

These Minelabs are sounding more and more like something I want. I only get to the salt water on occasion, but hit as many fresh water beaches as I can - both in the water and on the sand. Which M-Lab would be best for me?

Ok, thank you Mike. Now I understand what you were saying. I was having a senior moment. It looks like the Calif. beaches might hold some of their booty from this Arizona pirate.

I'll know early Thursday morning.
