First time knocking on a door to ask permission...

I have been eyeballing this house down the road from me for a while now. It sits on a nice big corner lot in the little borough that dates back to the late 1800s. Today I decided that I was going to ask permission. I drove my '88 Wagoneer (cause who can say no to someone driving a Woody) and knocked on the door. No one answered, so I thought about leaving! I knocked again and a nice lady answered the door. I repeated word for word what Goes4Ever has on his website, and she said Yes!!! Then she said hold on a minute...she went inside and came back out with a picture of the house from the late 1800s and there was a blacksmith shop on the property, complete with buggies out front! Then she invites me in to meet her husband and they lend me a book about the history of the area. They said that they have lived there for 30 years or so and when they first moved in, a couple of guys came out with their metal detectors. Hopefully they didn't take everything. I know detectors have improved in the last 30 years, so I am hopeful. If there was a blacksmith shop there, I am expecting massive amounts of iron. Looks like a SEF 6x8 or Sunray X5 kinda hunt! I probably won't get over there till Tues or Thursday afternoon/evening, possibly even next weekend. Can't wait!!!

Sounds like a job for TTF. Just go slow and low you will do fine, after all the mighty E trac has only been around a short while so those other guys certainly did not get it all.

I can't wait! This book is awesome. It has some old maps and the locations of the 1st Tavern/General Store and it is right down the road. It sits on a farm now, guess I need to get used to asking permission!!!

Thats so cool when the appreciation for history is reciprocated. Awesome. Yes there is going to be A LOT of iron there! Work through it. 30 years ago would have been someone like me with my trusty "Ole Blue" Whites 6000diPro and Im sure they missed a ton of stuff.

Asking permission is always a tough thing. Rejection is usually a hard hurdle to overcome. Look at it from the homeowners view----They are being asked by some stranger to come onto their property and leave with a bunch of valuable coins/rings etc...without a return ( depends of course on how you handle the negotiating). I offer this way of approaching a potential site-----AND IT WORKS---ask the homeowner if they would like to "trade' some metal detecting time for you for something you are good at---.even if some yard work is all you can offer. I do tree and shrubbery work and I tell them that I would like to detect their property and in return I will do some manual labor to compensate for this. I also let them know that I will do the work BEFORE I detect. BE HONEST and work with the homeowner-----oh yea---fill your holes and give our hobby a good name.

I hope the yard is loaded and the leads lead to a lot of good finds!!
