Today for the first time I used my Excallibur 1000 on the beach. I have 30 years of experience with metal detectors, but this is my first Minelab detector I have ever used.

And I must say that I was realy impressed with the performance of the machine. Found a total of 20 coins and 4 peaces of silver. No gold yet but the conditions on the beach today were everything but perfect.

I do have 2 questions:

1) I was searching in the disc mode and every time the detector nulled out the threshold came back as a humming sound. I know that is how this detector works, but the detector does not return to the Normal threshold. As I move my scoop over the coil the normal threshold does return. I want to know if that is normal.

2) I like to know if a dubble sound in the disc mode is always a bad signal. Because I did not dig them because I thought they were iron.

Thanks,

Andre

Well, you did better than me my first time out with the Excal. The humming sound after a null is iron. That double sound is usually (for me) a beer top, but gold & nickels have about the same tone.
I'm fairly new with my machine,as well, but all the reading up on it & watching videos, it seems that most folks hunt in PP, then switch to Disc when you hit a signal. Seems to find the deeper targets that way. I'm sure some of the wiser ones will chime in soon.

Its called PITCH HOLD. The Explorers have it available as a means of picking up weak targets you might not hear. It changes based on the last target response.... iron ... low tone.... coin high tone.... pull tab.. medium. I like it on a gold machine... but could have done without it on the Xcal.

Ive found silver studs that have the scratchy sound and deep gold just on the fringe can. Earring, screws, and corroded pennies can too. I say in Disc.... if it beeps dig it. But learn how the bottle caps sound. They sound good and are REALLY deep so you waist a lot of time digging them.

I don't have a minelab but I like the sleek look of the excal, but maybe one day, how is it on land hunting just curious?

I have not used the detector on land yet. I bought this detector for the wet sand only.

On land I 'm using several other detectors. But my main detector is a Laser B1.

This detector is made in England, and great on the small medieval coins we are finding here in The Netherlands.
