First time detector here....

Hello everyone, found this forum and got hooked on all the stories and pictures. Well I bought my first metal detector, it's an Ace 150, now thinking I should have bought the 250, but could not seem to spend a little bit more (budget). Anyway, I received it 2 days ago, dragged my 20 month old to the playground and started hunting LOL. Did ok for 2 hrs. a little under a dollar in change LOL. I did however noticed this detector does not detect very light weight gold jewelry :-( Any tips from you guys?

I have heard that in air tests, the 150 and 250 do not do that great on tiny gold, but in the dirt, they hit on it better...The 150 will be a great begginer's detector...In the future, I am sure you will upgrade and find a lot of loot...
Welcome to the addiction...

Happy Hunting,

Welcome to the forum and it's good that you chose Garrett , happy hunting Hank!

Thank you guys for the warm welcome. I live in a house that was built in 1917 in a town next to Chicago where Al Capone ruled back then. After putting my baby to sleep I sneaked out to the backyard and searched a small section, dug out an old shot gun shell, western field 12, that's what is says. Hope to find some cool stuff.

There have been people tromping around the area around Chicago for a LONG time and losing stuff regularly. You have a great hunting area. good luck and Happy Hunting.

welcome to the forum, First let me tell you you dont need an expensive detector to be a good detectorist, and you dont need to upgrade to a better one thinking it will go a lot deeper than you are now. First learn your machine, know what it is trying to tell you by its different sounds and displays.Second of all you can add various coils to your machine for different situtions, and also make it go a lot deeper than the stock coil.It is a lot cheaper than upgrading to a more expensive machine and have a whole new learning cycle.I know from experince, over 35years worth. I use two very tried and true simple machines the Ace 250 and the Whites coinmaster plus If I went under water I would use a AT-Pro. But I have no desire to dive on wreaks. Like I said learn all you can about your detector. Happy hunting Wayne in Delaware

MrGee, I just hope they keep losing stuff :clapping:, maybe I will get lucky.

Wayne, thank you for your suggestions.
