I've heard nothing but good things about them for years. Now that I'm moderately disgusted with the reliability of my Excalibur, I scored a used Tiger Shark in the classifieds. Now I shall see how well it works compared to my Garrett and my Fisher. All water machines. Others have explained I'll be pleasantly suprised. Jim

Hey Jim

I hope your new Tiger Sharks works well for you, I've had mine going on 9 yrs. with no problems. Mine has been stone reliable, and once the internal controls have been set to your liking, just set it and forget it.HH.............Hombre

I've had one for about a year and have been pleased with it so far. Haven't tried any other water machines to compare to, however.

Wow a good track record!!! But at about 4.5 pounds sounds heavy, although it is totally waterproof.

1) I see that the Tiger Shark has 3 Concentric coils available for it. Are there any DD coils available for it ??

2) I heard it has Bandido type circutry with a Manual GB knob. Does the Tiger Shark have ED 180 or ED 120(uMax) discrimination ?? The reason I ask this is because I was told that the ED 120 discrimination DOES handle rusted-oxidized iron better than ED 180 discrimination, from a very experienced user with many Tesoro units and tests for a major MDing company.

3) I have also not found out if the Lobo ST has ED 180 or ED 120 discimination either ??

Yes, the V, C, and T all DO have ED 180.

Golden uMax DOES have ED 120, with Fixed GB.

Obviously the Silver uMax must have ED 120, with Fixed GB.
Nothing written about it here.>> http://www.tesoro.com/product/detectors/silvermicromax/

I see that the Compadre has ED 180, with Fixed GB..

Tesoro does not NOW still make a ED 120 unit with Manual GB new(as an Edit now I just thought that it could be the Tiger Shark that has this!!!). I would like to get a lighter and an older Manual GBing> Bandido II uMax, Eldorado, or Euro Sabre with ED 120. I suppose I would not lose that much depth as compared to the new units, as a trade off to get better rusted-oxidized IRON handling.

Congrats on the Tiger Shark. Looking forward to a report. I have been torn on saving for an excal as I see the "best water machine" claims right along with the "I need it back from repair" reports. I've got a CZ20 and Sand Shark that so far just keep working.

Don't know a darn thing about the ED numbers you speak of. I did hear there was a double D coil for it and it's scarcer en hens teeth. One guy who I talked with saw one for sale for $300 but passed on it. There's a lot to be said for the Double D design compared to the concentric. Much easier to see how you can cover more ground deeper than with the Concentric configuration. I am enjoying all the comments about the TS. Maybe I'll learn something if I keep my mind open. Jim

Take the Tiger back to the places you couldnt hunt with your other machines because of concentrations of nails. You will be pleasantly surprised at how good this machine is picking gold rings mixed in with iron nails! Iron will give a "snap" or a real sharp tone or even a click on the smaller nails, but you will still hear the tone of a good target. I laugh each time I lift a scoop of sand and see nails on top because I know there is a good target in there somewhere too. I think I have pulled up to 6 nails out of a scoop along with a good target.

Hi Scully

You are spot on about the Tiger Shark in the rusty nails, I have taken mine to empty lots where old houses used to stand. If you get a good signal through the popping and spitting of rejected ferrous trash, it should be a non ferrous find, and usually a good one. HH............Hombre

So the Tiger Shark is good in rusty iron!! That is rare as very, very few machines are, that is great! It is too bad there was not more DD coils available for the Tiger Shark because then it would handle iron even better yet! It has Bandido circuitry and must have ED 120 discrimination then, because I have heard complaints about the ED 180 discrimination on the Vaquero and Tejon as it is not good in iron and one person called the Vaquero an iron hog.

"The Tiger Shark uses microprocessor technology to create a true dual function machine. In Normal Mode, the Tiger Shark works like any other Tesoro detector. It uses the same great ground balance and discrimination features that made the Bandido series so successful. On land, the Tiger Shark can be used for coin and relic hunting and even gold prospecting."

1) Do you guys HIP-MOUNT your Tiger Shark when using it on land??

2) Do you find the 4.5 pound weight a problem or not at all??

Well David..................

The Tiger is a bit heavy, but I mount the control housing under the arm cuff for better balance. I use mine in the water for the most part, but have used it on land hunts also. Once submerged in the water the Tiger attains a nuetral bouyancey, and is not uncomfortable at all. As far as the ED 120 disc is concerned........It is similar to my original bandido in the iron. Just my take on it after all these years.............Hombre

I received my new to me but used Tiger shark recently. Just did some testing in the dry with it. I am happy. Tested with various gold and silver rings, coins, large and small rusty nails, and foil. It seems like a great machine. I cannot wait to get it in the water. It hit on a very tiny child's gold ring buried at 4 inches. It was a tiny wisp of a thing. I did not try it any deeper as I have time restraints for the next 3 weeks.

Sometimes it quacks like a duck which is amusing.

Best Regards,
Steve

I'm on the waiting list for a new TS and was wondering about hip mounting...Do any of you use any special harness that you've found or literally just place it on you belt? I was thinking of some straps available at the army surplus store might work or on oversize fishing vest with a large pocket?

Thanks in advance...the wait time is killing me...

I have the Tesoro "SAND SHARK", I think it has the same mounting set up as the "TIGER SHARK". I was thinking about getting one of those tool belt that have the suspenders attached to it. It would sure spread out the weight of the unit to your shoulders and hip, making it feel pretty light. My opinion.

Hi Mining Town,
I have the same question, see post below this one. I am sure there will be some high quality responses to our inquiry!

Best Regards,
Steve

I love my tiger shark. I found my first gold ring on land with it. It was in a dry lakebed under a huge rock that was at least 4" thick. I also mount mine under my wrist, and it is fine in the water. Good luck.

I never heard that claim that ED 120 handles iron better than ED 180. Where is that information? In all of Tesoro's company material, I've never seen or heard of that before. I have a Stingray II and a Tejon - personally from my experience with them, I think they handle iron the same - very well. Anyone have any information which demonstrates that ED 120 will handle iron better than ED 180? If so, why would that be and what's the difference between the two??

Thanks
Don

My TS is used. The person who owned it before me put it in a surplus army canteen holder. With just a few snips you can turn a canteen holder into a protective cover that a 2" nylon dive type belt can slide through and hold nicely. The one I got is used upside down. You cut and opening out of the BOTTOM of the canteen holder, open the snaps at what should be the top of the canteen holder and slide the control box into the holder from the bottom to the top. Theres room between the snaps for the coil and headphone wires to come out and if you snap it shut it hold the TS control box just fine. The knobs are protected but you can still look down and see them. I cut a small slit in the canvas canteen holder, slid a wire tie through it and tightened it down around the coil cable so I had protection for the strain relief so it wouldn't be wiggled to and fro and become intermittent. Also helps when you trip or stumble and the coil wire gets caught on something. The wire tie takes the abuse. not the connection point to the electronics. Now I don't worry about the weight and where to mount the electronics. It's on my left hip out of the way and the only thing I swing is the coil and the shaft. Jim
