First Silver!!!!

It's been a rough season so far, bought a new safari in february and shortly after found out that my father in law has stage 3 lung and throat cancer, then I just found out that the wife is pregnant with our first child! Needless to say that things have been crazy and I havent been able to dedicate the time to metal detecting like I had hoped this year. So yesterday I got out to try to work with the Pro Coil for a bit and work on my neighbors property that was build in 1880. All I could find were phantom signals but I kept plugging away. Finally when the frustration made me want to sell the whole rig on Craigslist I slapped on the 6x8 sef and the first signal I dug was an undated SLQ!!!!!!! It's pretty worn but after a year of only finding clad i'm beyond thrilled :)

Great find, enjoy that they don't come that often. I think I have found maybe 2 in my 6 years of detecting. I know I heard someone else say this recently but for now just notch everything out but like 39,38,37,36,35,34,33. Those are the easiest to learn and are usually good targets. Then you can go back over again later. I am sure someone will know a lot more then me and give you some more ideas.. lol

Thanks Klever! I decided to take the day off of work today to get the wife's car worked on and while I was waiting for the dealership to call me back I went ahead and got the Safari out and took your advice and notched everything out. I had a pretty productive 3 hours out there and one little scare! Overall I found 2 clad quarters, 2 clad dimes, and 6 modern pennies and a 1956 wheatie. Pretty happy about that part. The scare happened when I decided to dig a very faint signal that I could only get to repeat at 1 angle and was reading just about the bottom of the depth scale with a 35vdi. I kept digging and probing and more digging and probing and nothing. At about 12 inches down I finally get a response from my vulcan 360... I stick my hand and find what I thought was a root so I gave it a little tug and wth? a black wire marked 600 volts..........Needless to say I covered that hole up and went to the other side of the old house I detect at!

Congrats on the silver! Sorry to hear about your Father-In-Law's cancer problem but a BIG Congrats on the new baby news!!
I've found that one of the best therapy's for me when things get crazy or stressful (who doesn't have the deal with stress)!!! is to get out there and metal detect. There is NOTHING like going to a beach either early in the morning before the sun and crowds get there or late evening when the crowds leave to see the sun setting and standing a chance of getting some gold or silver jewellery! Or if your not near the coast, to go to a field or an old homestead site with hopes of getting what you just detected!! I hope you find lot's more silver at that site and who knows? maybe a ring or two!!!! Better still, a big cache of coins!!:clapping:..........there goes my imagination running again!!!
P.s. Try to stay away from those high voltage underground lines!
P.s.s. What were those phantom signals you said you were getting and how did they sound/I.D. and how deep do you think they were (did you dig them) ?

Yeah I will make a point of staying away from all high voltage underground lines! And thank you for the well wishes, we are pretty excited. I completely agree with you on how MD'ing is one of the best stress relieving activities out there! In fact that is exactly why I went out today; dealing with a stressed out hormonal pregnant wife makes MD'ing one of the best prescriptions out there lol.

As for my issues with the procoil: I'll come across signals that read anywhere from a solid 38-40 and are generally repeatable at 90 degrees and register at a depth of around 6-8 inches (rough guess)....until I dig. I get around the target depth and run my pointer at max sensitivity and nothing. So I keep digging sometimes until the entire Lesche digger is in the hole and still nothing. At this point I reswing my safari over the hole and the plug and I no longer have a signal whatsoever. This happens a solid 9 out of 10 times i run into signals that register with those numbers and all are accompanied by a nice silver sound. The other issue is that it will pick up on a sweet signal and when I do the double d wiggle and it seems like the signal is stretched out over 3 or 4 feet! I run stock coin and jewelry, high trash, and auto sens. When I switch to 6x8 sef running the same program and sensitivity I have no issues whatsoever. I know it must be user error but I'm seriously considering selling the procoil and just getting a bigger sef coil. If you have any ideas or tips to help me out I'm game.

Try blacking out 40. Sounds to me like you have a rust problem that is wrapping around to 40.

Nice SLQ, open 32 and you may find a IH cent or two..They hit 32-34 for me in Central Jersey. In agreement with Kin,,,I notch out 40 or avoid it as it's always trash /aluminum shards in my experience. I do dig them once in while as Croakersmoker commented quite some time ago that he's found silver there....hmm..never been my luck, however.

Congratulations on a truly outstanding first silver! :clapping: I second what Goldstrike said regarding whats going on in your life and how detecting/friends can help get a guy through...:please::thumbup:
