First silver with SE

Yooper

Member
Well I finally found some silver tonight, although nothing great. A 64' Rosie at 5".

Last night I found two nice wheaties that were within 3" of each other. A 1918 and a 1919, only about 4" deep in a well hunted out park. They must have missed these coins as they were on the edge of the park right under a big tree.

I have been hunting in IM 28 and then have the discrimination cleared to use AM when I want to check a signal. I also like using the pinpoint to determine the size of the target.

One other thing I notice. When I get an iffy signal while detecting and think I know where the target is, I switch over to Pinpoint mode and the target will be several inches away from where I thought it was and the target seems to be larger too. I have yet to dig a good target in that situation.

I really, really, really need a probe. I was trying to dig a 00-29 signal near a tree that was showing 8" deep. I cannot for the life of me find that target, but the signal is good. I then found two other signals by another tree. One was coming in at 4-28 and the other 3-29. The two signals are about 4" apart and 7-8" deep, but I could not find those either :ranting:

I almost don't even want to dig deepies right now. I dig for 15 minutes and then end up throwing the dirt right back in the hole. Talk about frustrating. Especially when you know there is a nice coin down there that wants to be retrieved.

Way to go yooper, I got two wheaties this afternoon out of 16 coins dug....but still no silver....Where I have been going is really hit hard...The wheaties like yours was found next to tree alongside of roots...& I have come to the same conclusion as you about the pinpoit & the PINPOINTER...from what I understand the Sunray is the way to go...The only experience I've had with a pinpointer was one I found on the YUBA River about three years ago & I gave it away because You almost had to touch something with it to get it to sound off...(Whites)...That's why I've been shying away from them...But from all I've read here on the forum...The Sunray is a great tool....Definetly on my Christmas list....Hey EVERYBODY...Is it hard to self install? I can't see where it would be that difficult??? Drill & Dremel??? Suggestions??? I hate spending extra money if I don't have to...HH...TT

That's what I keep wondering. I would rather self install too. Heck, I was a journeyman machinist at one point, so it can't be that difficult.

Before someone else finds those plugs of yours and pull the possible 2 Quarters and 1 Dime. And they could either be Seated or Barber if you are correct on the depth of the targets. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

It is much easier to just send the Upper Shaft and Probe to Ralph at Sun-Ray. There is the drilling to be done on the Shaft along with soldering of wires from the connector that goes to the Explorer Head to the Probe Box. Something that I think a professional should only do since it would be bad to get wires mixed up. Could cause very bad problems.

Tomtowns and Yooper; the X-1 comes with its own upper aluminum shaft,
you just remove your original upper aluminum shaft ,
plug in the X-1 switching block attached to its own aluminum shaft,
one difference is that you have to have to coil the coil cable around the OUTSIDE of the shaft so that you can plug into the X-1 blackbox...
You finally attach the holding clip to the armrest area with cable ties.
There was a modification posted on this forum that allowed the coil cable to pass inside the shaft, it required you to drill a hole in the upper shaft just forward of the switch block...

I bought a 3/4 inch countersink bit for the job, these bits do cut a pretty good hole in aluminum and I was nearly ready to drill ~ but backed out of the idea...

Seemed to me that the elongated hole required might weaken the shaft.
Snowy didn't do it...

I think that a dremel tool would work pretty well for that modification, although I would hate to put a hole in the shaft like that.

Me too Yooper, that's a fair patch of metal that person removed from the shaft.
That shaft has to support the weight ~ and inertia of the coil; plus the lower stem.
I really think things would be strained a bit with a WOT coil hanging below...

I cant imagine hunting without my sunray. It is a blessing especially when digging in tree roots. As far as hunted out areas, after the past few days i don't believe in them.Im hunting a fairgrounds that all the locals go to regularly,i moved to a different spot than i had been hunting in the fairgrounds friday.since then i have 4 ih 9 merc's 3 riosies and my first barber quarter a 1895 very well worn but im still thrilled with it.one of the ih's was less than 2 inches deep on the main corner of the grounds cant believe that was missed....hh ...jon

I wouldn't even mind doing a little spiiceing & soldering...Do they come with connecting instructions??? I'm not gonna send my shaft off because we can detect here all year long...So I guess that would mean an extra $30 for an upper EX ll shaft???

itchin' to get out with it. It's been nice for the last three days...but now it's raining and about 34 degrees. Figures. I would imagine the only detecting I will get to do will be in my back yard for the next few months. If the weather gets around 40 I might get a chance. I can only hope.

I like the cable inside & am gonna do this mod...I believe the only weakening of the shaft would be from side to side & not really significant...I was just thinking that if I could do the installation myself, I could figure out the best position to do the mounting of the switch....Well to hell with it...I'll just wait until I can afford the "EXTRA" upper shaft...

I may be wrong but MOST of the weight I would think would be supported by the side walls & don't think the upper or lower walls give much support unles you are banging them hard from side to side against trees or brush or such...again,I don't know...

And less of a headache. I don't know if there is any instructions sent with the Probe. You would have to contact Ralph at SunRay and ask him about that. You also got to think of it this way, If you decide to sell your SE later on down the road because a New Explorer comes out then you have the original Shaft to put back on the SE and that way you will save a few bucks later on if in fact the Probe is still usuable with the Explorer SE Shaft later on. Good Luck with your Probe and hope you are able to do it yourself without too much hassle. Good Luck and HH.

I myself were like you about the coil cable being on the inside but I had to just do what I had to do and put the cable on the outside wrapped around the lower shaft. I took 2 Black Plastic Zip Ties and fastened one on the bottom and one up towards the top so the cable won't move around. It looks good but I wish, like you that there was some way to have the cable inside the shaft. Well, Good Luck with whatever you do and hope this frustration is cured when you get the Probe mounted to the SE and you start finding some great finds. Good Luck and HH.

maybe do the mod...maybe not...I'll have to check it out further... I'm in the process right now of trying to get a buyer to paypal me the money he owes from a different type transaction & supposedly he will be able to come up with the $1500 by next weekend....We'll see but it's really no biggie...I'm in no hurry as I've got my plate full just trying to learn the different tones & screens...Just when I start to think I have part of it figured out, a new twist pops up that I need to try...SOOO MUCH to learn...I know it can't be learned fast & I'm not getting frustrated...I can always do a quickstart or run it wide open...I'm doing a lot of experimenting & when I feel like I'm getting overloaded I just put it in AM (HEAVY METAL) & listen to the music...HH...TT:crazy:
