First Silver of 2007

I wish with the unseasonably warm weather we have had here in NJ I had more time to hunt, but now colder air is moving in.

I got out for a few hours last week and hit a nature center. As I was walking past the office with my detector, the woman flew out , yelling "What are you doing with that?" I said "just looking for old coins". She looked relived and said "Oh, I thought that was a weed wacker! Have fun!" I thought for sure I wasn't going to be allowed to detect there!

Anyway, I found the 1941 Quarter, some wheaties, a 1972 Kennedy that I thought for sure was a colonial copper, 3 mid 1800's flat buttons, one marked "SCOVILL", one marked "TREBLY - GILT" and on the way out, a nice Tootsie Toy Jaguar.

When i have a decent hunt thats exactly what i find lots of times. An old car a world war button and a silver or a indian head. What part of the country are you detecting in. Im in wisconsin so im done for awhile. Whats the front of the button look like? Is it the modern eagle or a wild eagle. Scovill made buttons in world war 11 and civil war. The backs are very similar but the civil war ones have a wild eagle on the front. Nice finds

Love the story Camman. Very funny.
I had the reverse situation last year. I went to a public pool and asked if I could detect there. The lady at the gate gave me the go ahead. When she saw what I was doing a few minutes later, she came up and said I couldn't detect, as I would damage the lawn. She thought I was holding a walking stick when I went through the turnstile!
I managed to talk her around and had a good days hunt.
Mick Evans.

I am in Southern NJ...

The 3 buttons all appear to be mid 19th century, based on the shanks. They are all plain flat buttons. From what I can tell there is no design remaining on the front. Scovill was founded in 1820., Gilted buttons were fahionable about 1820-1850. The area is known to have been a part of the Underground Railroad, and is near a creek that may have routed escaped slaves to the small village nearby. Obvioulsy these plated and gilted buttons were not worn by slaves, but possibly the trsfficers. I will go back when the weather is cooperative.

Yeah I had an elderly lady watch me for some time then walked over and asked where she could buy a weed whacker that quiet.
