Had a couple of firsts. All of my detecting so far has been rural, small town & suburban. A buddy got the detecting bug from me and got permission to hunt two old homes under rehab in the the urban area of St. Louis. It was interesting. The yards were much smaller than I was used to and one back yard so covered up with trash you couldn't walk six inches without boards, bricks, garbage-scratch that back yard.
The first house produced three pennies, 1912, 1918 & l modern. The next house had a nice front yard with a real steep slope. I started hitting coins from the first minute. About 15 minutes I got a solid hit at 4 inches. Dug down and saw something shiny and huge. Figured it was some shiny junk. Pulled it out and had my first half dollar, a 1957 Ben Franklin. Unreal. Haven't held one of those in almost 40 years. Ended up with 28 coins, only one silver and three wheats. My buddy picked up 8 coins but this was only his third time out. Of course he was swing a white so maybe...
The guy who gave us permission rehabs homes so looking forward to a lot more urban detecting. Going to buy a 5 incher to work the trashy areas. It pays to mention your hobby. You never know who has the connections to put you into some fresh ground.
