First silver find for a newbie, in my own front yard!

Call it beginners luck, but I don't care. I have had my new F2 since January but only have 4-5 hours with it. We sold our house a couple of weeks ago but I decided I should give my yard a good once over before we move out. The first day I had my F2 I went out in the yard and dug a bunch of trash, just construction scrap from when my house was built. My house was built in the late 70's and this entire area was just farm ground before that so I wasn't expecting much. Anyway I was out for about 15 minutes and got a good solid dime signal. I got it pinpointed and dug a plug that was about 6 inches around and as deep as my lesche could reach. I pulled the plug out and right in the bottom I could see the edge of a coin. I pulled it out and thought at first it was some type of token because it didn't look like any dime I had ever seen. I took it in the house and ran it under some water and below is what I found. The bad news is it was right at the exact depth of my Leshce and nicked the edge of the coin when I dug my plug. The good news is as my first silver it is not for sale so the scratch from the Lesche doesn't matter to me. If it would have been 1/2 inch shallower I would have missed it all together. I was reading a long thread on another forum the other day about how long it took people to find their first silver. I am still floored that this thing was buried 8 inches deep in my front yard, in the middle of nowhere. I can only picture some cowboys on horseback or something.

Enjoy your great find and may you have many more.

I remember my first seated dime , it was not my first silver but first seated.
I thought wow that was easy , well it took over a year to find my next .
I have seen and found some great coins dug with friends but
have yet to see on of those pop out of the ground .
Congrats

sheesk man, when was your house BUILT?

only goes to show (even though your home was built in the late 70's) we never know where the next great find is going to come from. Sometimes those finds are closer to home then we could imagine. Your case is a prime example. Congrats on your first silver coin as it is a beauty! - Jim

p.s. welcome to great hobby of metal detecting.

Hey flyin-lowe, thanks for the details of your hunt and congratulations on a nice find. I'm a newby too and got my MD a couple of weeks ago, but my foot's been a problem and my mobility is limited right now. But like you, my house is where some old farmland used to be and I actually expect to find some junk iron since I'm right where the barn was. It was nice to read about your hunt and it gave me a lot of encouragement for searching my back yard.

Yeah my house was built in the late 70's. This was all farm ground before. Just down the road is a state park that is about the same age as my house. They damned a stream and flooded approximately 1000 acres. There is an abandoned house down the road from me that is a lot older then my house. I started hunting it last Saturday but only got about an hour in. The only thing I found of any interest was a 1947 Austrian Groshen 1 cent coin. It is in pretty rough shape. I have been really busy with work, 2 kids (under the age of 7), selling the house, looking for a house, etc etc etc. I just can't wait until the weather warms up, we get settled in to a new place and I can do some swinging, at least more then an hour or so a week. I did go hunt the beach at the state park one evening for about an hour and found a few clad coins, about 20 cents worth. I checked in at the state park and you are allowed to hunt the beaches in Indiana. The bad thing is you have to get a permit and sign an agreement that anything you find of value will be turned over to the front office so they can attempt to locate the owner. I didn't turn my .20 cents in because if you find change you are the rightful owner:drinking:. I probably won't go back there, I didn't realize that was the rules until i got there.

Very nice find! I headed there right now! J/K!

That is a great find! Congratulations:clapping:!

Your suppose to start out finding Rosies and Mercuries before you get something like that. now do it over and do it right.:)
