:detecting:finally ! started mding late last summer . went to a vol fire dept today that i used to live near, knowing before they built it there were older houses there.herd also there was a plantation there but did no research on that . day started off kinda crappy lots of junk and a few clads. on way to car had a jumpy tone. about three inches down on its side seen the silver from the 1889 seated dime . then after a brief celebration scanned hole 1 more time to find the shield nickel in the same hole just lying there . not sure on year but made out the stars around a five and after a little research on the net figured what it was. got it soaking now lets hope i can get a year out of it it is in pretty rough shape.i put in in olive oil if that's not right please reply that is what info i found on cleaning it. happy hunting all looking forward to heading out in the morning.

Great first silver find!! I have cleaned with the olive oil before. I cleaned my first I.H. penny and while it did clean it, it also took away some of the detail. When I first found the penny I could make out 18xx on it. After soaking it the 18 disappeared. Be careful. Great finds again!!

Well shucks. You sure picked a strange one for your first. I've never found a seated coin so I'm super jealous. Hope you're not too upset when all you find is a lowly silver rosie. Great find!

1899 is a great find. The oldest coin I have found so far is my 1901 Indian Head penny and of course it's not silver. 1913 V nickel is oldest silver followed by 1937 and 1938 Buffalo/Indian head nickels. I have not cleaned the last two coins I found, but let the 1913 V nickel set in A1 or worcestershire sauce overnight and it came out pitted and feeling rough. Looks like the olive oil cleaned up the coin pretty good on the face.

Congrats! Finding silver coins is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, I have only found one silver quarter (found it within two minutes, of not really knowing what to do and haven't read the manual yet), in my backyard of all places!

Awesome!:super:Congrats on the great finds!:beers:WTG!:please:
Thanks for sharing! Happy Hunting!:)
