great day out in the woods today. found a hotchkiss shell about 14 inches down with my dfx. couldnt believe my eyes! any tips on how to clean the shell up? thanks y'all and happy hunting.

That is one NICE find !

About cleaning it, I'm sure there are many capable people that can assist you in that matter, but the first person to come to mind with me is Pete George.... he co-authored one of the books out there on Artillery Shells.

Take care,

Kim

There is nothing I'd rather dig than a shell. Nothing like it. Congrats. I will include a link on restoring shells. Nobody is better at it than Richard Angelico. He's done a couple for me and then taught me how to do it myself. But first, submerge it in water until you start work on it. Those things begin to deteriorate the moment the oxygen hits them. The link is:

Nice shell!..and man, wish I had started diggin' at your age!

Boy, nice shell. I only have the base cup. Would love to find the whole thing. Just make sure it is not live before you start to clean it. WTG. If you google Hotchkiss shell it will show you a cut away view so you can see whats inside, and you will see why I say make sure its not live before you start working on it.

First FANTASTIC find! That is really great! My next question is, I have a DFX too, still learing that bad boy and was wonding what program you were using and if you remember how you had it set. I would really appreicate the info.

well Jason, i was hunting using the relic program and bumped up the pre amp and the A/C sensitivity. also go down the the whites DFX forum and under the pictures of Dave are some programs. Ive played around with his relic program and it works well.

I grew up in the area where they were developed in CT. There is a school named after the man and some amazing history.(Still yet to find any shells but shotgun shells tho :)) Maybe this year. Really cool find and congratulations!
