First run with 5x10 dd---small gold ring!

I just spent the last couple of days making sure my new 5x10 dd infinium coil would be waterproof. Added a couple layers of 2.4 oz glass over a layer of epoxy resin on the seams and over the entrance for the cable into the coil.

Took it out this morning to a place that I left lots of targets I could not retrieve using my 12x14 dd infinium coil last week. First thing I noticed was how light it was. The 12x14 dd is a brick. The 5x10 is ultralight. Especially on my homemade carbon straight shaft and the ATX chest mounted. Next thing was when I hit the water. The coil floats. Now, instead of holding a heavy 12x14 up, I am holding a floaty 5x10 down. Kind of nice to use some different muscles and give my sore wrist a break.

I tried to power things up, but no way. So, 3-4 disc. 6-10 sens., and ground balance. Right away, a deep quarter followed by a deep alum. can top. So I know its working. Tons of bobby pins. I did have to abandon several targets. Not sure if they were hot rocks or what, but when I dig 12"+ of sand in the water and start hitting rocks where I feel the target is, I have to move on if I can't get it after 10 big scoops or so.

Just last weekend I pulled a large mens silver ring after digging a giant pit using my 12x14. So I'm not quitting easy. Anyway, about 10-15 feet from where I pulled the silver I start digging today. With the 5x10 I can insert it into the hole, check the sides, etc.. Signal keeps getting louder. Must have been 10 big scoops again when the hole went silent, which is always a good thing. But when I checked my diggings I got nothing. Started to think something was stuck on my magnets that I could not make out. ( I always have tons of sand and small bits on my 3 magnets.) But the signal was so clear. Recheck the diggings and then as I get to the end of the pile way up front I hear it. I can't see anything on top of the black sand so it must be just under the surface. One shallow scoop and the tiny gold ring was shinning ultra bright in the morning sun. Looked like it was right out of the showroom, yet it was way deep in the sand. Probably less than a gram, too delicate for a toe ring. Either for young girl or petite woman. Very detailed carving and thin. ATX and the 5x10 dd infinium coil had no problem picking it up. I think my sensitivity was down to 6 at the time, but not sure. Disc at 3/4 and ground balanced to boot!

With my seahunter I hated my 8" mono cause I felt like I was missing ground when I tried to grid off a section. I loved my 10x 14 mono cause I could still pinpoint with the edge and get great coverage. These dd coils are taking some getting used to, but it did seem much easier to pinpoint with the 5x10 compared to the 12x 14 dd. Also the 5x10 seemed okay at covering ground. A was little tiny but better than the 8' mono on my seahunter. It would be really easy to hunt all day on a dry beach with the 5x10 because it is a feather weight, but who has all day? So I will probably stick with the 12x14 on a wide open beach, which I don't do much of. But in the water, I think this 5x10 is going to work out real good for me. More time scanning, but less time digging.

I'm new to the atx. Only been out maybe 10 times so far. I've tried to test the coil that it came with, but never really used it on a hunt. Just too used to my hip mount seahunter to lug the atx around as it was meant to be. It would be interesting if someone compared the atx dd to the 12x14 infinium dd to see if it did work better, but I have to say the infinium coils are working good enough for me. I can only dig so far. Plus, they are way cheaper. I may be up for a trade if someone doesn't like their 20" mono and wants a spare 12x14 atx coil. LMK

Good hunting.

Thanks for sharing your recent experiences with the Infinium 5X10 DD, Yes indeed that is one good coil for the ATX.

Only wish Garret would come out with one for ATX users, It would be a much used coil and if waterproof boy they would sell a bundle.

I've used the 5" X 10" DD in shallow water but never in greater depths of beyond 3' feet, Like how you sealed yours might just do that with mine. but for now will use the 8" coil water just got it in this week.

Thanks again for sharing, Appreciate this it not only shares get information but encourages us to get out there and hit the water :)

Thanks Paul,

Yesterday I was never deeper than 3', but this morning I was at my max of about 5.5'. I had emailed garrett about the waterproofness of the 5x10 and they just said something to the effect of "don't submerge it, no scuba." Not real clear, but it wouldn't suprise me if it was okay out of the box for 6'. I just didn't want to chance it. I am real hard on my coils so I also glued the cover on it as well at the same time I sealed the seam. Now I don't worry so much scrubbing the bottom or banging the rocks and opening the seam.

Today at a different local, it was a barren wastland. Just as I was getting out of the water I looked over and saw a small pocket of sand among some bolders. I stuck in the 5x10 and what do you know? A quarter. My large coil would never have fit. A nice surprise since my take for the day was just a penny up to that point.

I will admit though that it did seem more daunting to cover the ground here since I always used a larger coil at this spot. I have to pay more attention to where the small coil sweeps and slow down quite a bit more so I don't walk right over something good. Not easy to do when you are in a hurry.

Good hunting.

Hello BH,

I have compared the stock DD with an Infinium 10" X 14" DD, the ATX stock DD is better Across the board.

The stock coil is more sensitive with all targets, deeper too. The Infinium may fare best on extreme mineralztion or on tough West Coast ocean wet sand but for most conditions the stock is best compared with the larger 10"X 14" DD.

Currently, Have 5 coils for my ATX, not pictured is the smaller 3" X 7" DD.

Paul,

How do you like the 8" Mono Coil? Any feedback you can offer when using the 8" Mono?

Hi Paul,

That is very interesting. The infinium 10x14 is very heavy. I may just modify the origional atx 10x12 so that I can mount it on a standard garrett rod. It looks much lighter if it were removed from the stock shaft.

I failed to mention that I believe I may be getting close to 100 percent more depth out of my 5x10 dd out in the saltwater than I can get in an air test. That may be pushing it but I know it is much better in the water.

I hit a large open area with the 5x10 today and I have to admitt I was wishng I had the 10x14 on. Seems like I am not getting thorough coverage. Also, I still am having problems finpointing targets even with the 5x10 and had to leave some stuff behind. Just have to figure these dd coils out I guess. I would like to have some kind of pinpointer on a long shaft, but I'm already lugging too much of stuff around.

Hello BH,

Good job getting the most from the smaller DD, I really like mine and can relate with what you're experiencing with yours.

No matter what shaft we use with the stock coil, the weight will still feel on the heavy side. That's because of the larger coil and housing, something we have to deal with which is OK having a well built housing.

Its the smaller coils that will make the ATX better balanced, but then depth is lost.

Take care,

HH,
Paul

Hello TH,

Just got the 8" this week, so haven't took it out on a water hunt. But do like the balanced feel and air test extreamly well, its going to be a keeper for fresh water lakes and such.

No iron check of course, but a fair trade for a smaller waterproof coil wading in water.

Finally got a pic that may show up. My camera doesn't do close up well. Shows the big silver found with the large infinium dd, and the small gold found with the small infinium dd. Also the coil waterproofing mod.

Excellent workmanship BH, and congrats with the two rings.

That 5"X10" looks like it should withstand the pressure of 10' feet under water, shouldn't have any problems with leakage.

Good job, thanks for sharing.
Paul

Thanks Paul,

I just returned from my local spot with the 5x10 on. I have come to the conclusion that I may need to add some weight to the coil since I now find the floating coil to be kind of a pain. I will see what I can figure out.

I am headed to Waikiki for a 4 day trip and I have decided to take my 10x14 infinium coil just so that I will be able to cover more ground. I have limited search time so I need to make the best of it. May be tough though cause my makeshift travel scoop has a very short handle and small scoop. I may end up on working very shallow water and dry sand more than anything. Not holding my breath. I'm sure the competition is tough. Just looking for a nice fresh (golden) drop. I just hope lady luck is shinning down on me.

I thought about just taking my seahunter because is is so much more compact, but I really like how the ATX can run much more quiet and doesn't pick up the hot rocks.

Good luck BH and hope you get some yellow in your scoop, yes large coil will be great for coverage.

On another note, starting to use my 8" coil and must say its a keeper.

Should gave purshased one earlier must have coil, hope others consider getting one really good coil.

Enjoy your trip,
Paul

Hit the water last night just in time to see a crazy orange full moon rising. I just wanted to comment that I am liking this coil more and more. I am getting much better at pinpointing targets. Not much out there last night, but I did pick up a car key and a small silver toe ring with nothing but moonlight lighting the way. Does anyone have any good suggestions for weighing down the coil? LMK. Thanks
