I just spent the last couple of days making sure my new 5x10 dd infinium coil would be waterproof. Added a couple layers of 2.4 oz glass over a layer of epoxy resin on the seams and over the entrance for the cable into the coil.
Took it out this morning to a place that I left lots of targets I could not retrieve using my 12x14 dd infinium coil last week. First thing I noticed was how light it was. The 12x14 dd is a brick. The 5x10 is ultralight. Especially on my homemade carbon straight shaft and the ATX chest mounted. Next thing was when I hit the water. The coil floats. Now, instead of holding a heavy 12x14 up, I am holding a floaty 5x10 down. Kind of nice to use some different muscles and give my sore wrist a break.
I tried to power things up, but no way. So, 3-4 disc. 6-10 sens., and ground balance. Right away, a deep quarter followed by a deep alum. can top. So I know its working. Tons of bobby pins. I did have to abandon several targets. Not sure if they were hot rocks or what, but when I dig 12"+ of sand in the water and start hitting rocks where I feel the target is, I have to move on if I can't get it after 10 big scoops or so.
Just last weekend I pulled a large mens silver ring after digging a giant pit using my 12x14. So I'm not quitting easy. Anyway, about 10-15 feet from where I pulled the silver I start digging today. With the 5x10 I can insert it into the hole, check the sides, etc.. Signal keeps getting louder. Must have been 10 big scoops again when the hole went silent, which is always a good thing. But when I checked my diggings I got nothing. Started to think something was stuck on my magnets that I could not make out. ( I always have tons of sand and small bits on my 3 magnets.) But the signal was so clear. Recheck the diggings and then as I get to the end of the pile way up front I hear it. I can't see anything on top of the black sand so it must be just under the surface. One shallow scoop and the tiny gold ring was shinning ultra bright in the morning sun. Looked like it was right out of the showroom, yet it was way deep in the sand. Probably less than a gram, too delicate for a toe ring. Either for young girl or petite woman. Very detailed carving and thin. ATX and the 5x10 dd infinium coil had no problem picking it up. I think my sensitivity was down to 6 at the time, but not sure. Disc at 3/4 and ground balanced to boot!
With my seahunter I hated my 8" mono cause I felt like I was missing ground when I tried to grid off a section. I loved my 10x 14 mono cause I could still pinpoint with the edge and get great coverage. These dd coils are taking some getting used to, but it did seem much easier to pinpoint with the 5x10 compared to the 12x 14 dd. Also the 5x10 seemed okay at covering ground. A was little tiny but better than the 8' mono on my seahunter. It would be really easy to hunt all day on a dry beach with the 5x10 because it is a feather weight, but who has all day? So I will probably stick with the 12x14 on a wide open beach, which I don't do much of. But in the water, I think this 5x10 is going to work out real good for me. More time scanning, but less time digging.
I'm new to the atx. Only been out maybe 10 times so far. I've tried to test the coil that it came with, but never really used it on a hunt. Just too used to my hip mount seahunter to lug the atx around as it was meant to be. It would be interesting if someone compared the atx dd to the 12x14 infinium dd to see if it did work better, but I have to say the infinium coils are working good enough for me. I can only dig so far. Plus, they are way cheaper. I may be up for a trade if someone doesn't like their 20" mono and wants a spare 12x14 atx coil. LMK
Good hunting.
