First real hunt with the 70 at least I got some silver

Got out with the X-terra 70 today for a first real hunt since getting it last month. Was looking for a civil war period house site I've been studying in a diary I have. After alot of walking I finally located it late this afternoon so I'll be back later this week. Only got about an hour and a half on the site but maybe it will have some civil war relics in it.Did find an eagle button but it was busted up pretty bad any how heres the take couple of toe taps brass suspender clip odds and ends and then some coins.Got a couple of seated liberty dimes dated 1887 on both, got and indian head dated 1887 and another dated 1863 and a V-nickle dated 1889.
I was running the 6 inch DD 18 khz coil in 2 tone with sensitivity about 28.machine was purring right along no falsing in the dense iron at all.most targets were 8 - 9 inches. One good thing is one of the seated's had a nail stuck to it and it rang in clear you can still see the stain from the nail in the photo on the one on the right.

thanks for looking

Great assortment of coins and relics. I am particularly impressed by the dime with the iron nail stain. Think how many other detector/coil combinations would have simply passed over that one! Congrats. Next time you get out, give that multi-tone mode a try. I found it a bit confusing when I first started using it. But the more I use it, the more I like it. There is definitely an audio break on old iron that is not there when using fewer tones. JMHO HH Randy

seated dimes are tops...wtg:detecting:

Hey Keith,

Glad you still like that 70. It is a really great machine.

at least on the 6 inch DD HF.Ive noticed it unmask a-lot more than the 2 tone does in dense iron. Reminds me of the explorer in that mode. I belive that it will open a site back up to possibilities just by the 99 tones alone!!

Should be a fun spring and summer ahead with my new toy to play with. Just hope I dont go broke buying coils Ha-Ha.

Thanks

Hey Keith! I'm impressed with not just your finds but also your researching of the area. Where on earth did you find that diary?

through studying old maps and books then doing the leg work.I find a civil war unit I want to study up on and then try to find any regimental histories or Diarys were ever published. In my case I like to cavalry sites so I study Union and Confederate sources.Usually the cavalry spots are out of the way from the main areas and have never been hunted like the more obvious area's

this particular cavalry unit is Texas Boys composed of 4 regiments and luckily I've found published diarys from each regiment over the years so heres 4 different written accounts to cross check there day by day movement.

I'm not sure if this is the right spot yet or not but I'll check her out more thoroughly later this week.

heres what I'm going on... On this site the trooper says "we've been camped at --------- house for 4 days. had a skirmish with the yank cavalry yesterday 2 miles from here towards ------- Ga. on ------- Creek etc.. etc.. etc.."

So as you can see the only thing you need after that is a good civil war topo map that had the house names on it and compare it with a modern map and get out and walk.

I've got a g.p.s. but I can fiqure out how to use ha-ha. So I just go old school and rely on my sense of direction.

I do spend many a days walking around not locating nothing or find that the woods have been logged so many times that there virtually unhuntable .

But ive got enough spots to check out to last me the rest of my life . well I hope any way.

I know it sounds easy the way I've explained the technique I've used but believe it or not it took me many a years to get it all to work together then one day it becomes like a sixth sense and you find spots without thinking. And one spot usually leads to another.

After awhile you notice things in the woods to let you know theres a house site there with hardly any visual signs present except maybe some stones left from the chimney or maybe a depression from a 140 year old well hole filled in or such.then sometimes theres nothing but the iron left.and those are usually the best ones to find.
The will get your heart to pumping.

any how thanks for asking and what one man uses to look for sites may not work for another .

just use what works for you and have fun is the main thing..

Keith,

That was nicely explained. Sounds like you have a great workflow for your relic hunting. I use a similar approach. Having fun should always be the main objective.
