First real hunt with 70

7centsworth

Well-known member
It rained almost all day except for a couple of hours and those I detected at a church I have hit acouple of times with my 50. I found two nickels , two memorial pennies a dime and a 1940 wheat penny. Weird thing is the wheat gave a 40 on the tid when I dug it it then read a 34. Couldn't figure the 40 out , it was about 7 inches though that is probably why. I like the 70 alot already just getting used to the different numbers.

wheats NEVER, EVER give good readings for me, I can't figure it out, sometimes they come in at 34, 36, 38, 42..........the other day i had one at 44!!!
and a lot of days they bounce all over, very odd

good finds for a first hunt, keep it up, and get some pics up! we like to see those finds

Not bad for the first time out with the X-70 and at a place that you have hit with the X-50.
I was at a place today that almost everything that I dug showed numbers in the forty's. Most of the wheats and silver dimes were in the forty's, even the can slaw and sta tabs. I don't know if it has anything to do with it but the GB # was 8

Yeah, Ive dug 20 wheats now and they bounce a bit. Using the target stability helped some. I have since shut it off. At least wheat seems to bounce towards the top of the scale. Unlike Zincs. I have had a few that only bounced 36 to 40 and thats only three spots.

How did the nickels hit?

Congrats on the hunt! Wheats do indeed hit kinda wierd. Most of the time if I see a 34,36, even a 38 It is an older cent. The wheats tend to be at the 36-38, Beale.

As a general rule it seems best to let the ground determine what mode to run in. If there is a lot of iron and the resulting chatter, go to Pattern One to eliminate much of the noise. Otherwise use All Metal as I seem to gain a little extra depth in the All Metal mode. Was using 3 tones, but now use four tones per instructions from some members of this forum as it does seem slightly easier to pickup on coins in 4 tones. It still comes down to a matter of personal preference.

is it better to run around with the all metal mode instead of the patterns ?

The question is, which one works best for you. I can't tell you that you have to run in pattern1 or AM. That's something that you have to figure out for yourself.
For me, I run in Patt 1 most of the time, but their are those places that I like to run in AM. What works for me may not work for somebody else.

I don't know how many times I have checked to see if their is any difference in depth between AM or pattern 1 and their is none. I get the same depth if I'm in AM or pattern 1.

I stand corrected, after doing a table test between the All Metal and Pattern One mode, there wasn't a hill of beans difference in depth between the two different modes. The Prospecting Mode did seem to have little greater depth than either of the above two modes. Thanks guys for correcting me.

I do not notice a difference in depth either. I like 4 tone the best ,but thinking I will like 99 tones also.
