I have now had the MXT for a week.. I have practiced in the yard and now read the manual 3 times and watched the video.. I know Im not good yet, but I am beginning to get a feel for the machine and not afraid to move the dials off the presets..
I live near the state fair grounds.. goes back a lot of years and big crowds with lots of money pack the place for 10 days every year. The place is the one place where I do see folks out with MD's. So, I will be walking into a lot of potential that has been hunted. I probably have a better detector than most that walk in there. My question becomes settings... I really don't think the place will be real trashy..they keep it pretty clean..
I am thinking... relic mode.. trigger forward.. disc to zero.. and gain as high as it will stand..
that is I think I want to find everything and anything that is there..
If it is trashy, I may have to rethink things..
does this give me the most sensitivity and a starting point to work down from?

Probably will be a lot trashier than you think with
pulltabs in ever shape, form, and fashion. If you finances will allow it, I would suggest a smaller coil as a place to start. Usually you can pick-up one for around $80 of so. Mini-shooter of 5.3 either will work fine. Secondly while you may want to get
everything, I'd would start off with the disc. at
right below nickels and then run the sensitivity
up above the preset a notch or 2. Using the coin
mode may be to your advantage. (it is deeper that the relic mode by the way)
Try this: Set your machine up like mentioned above
and find yourself a good area, make a mental image of an area about 20 X 20 and work it and see what you come up with. Now try your settings as you mentioned in the question and(go over again) see if there is that much more there to be gained. There may be, there may not be. Worth a try. Let us know what happens.
Have fun and happy hunting,Richard

I agree with Richard on it may be a lot trashier than you think, the ones we detect sure are and in most cases most give up on them as there is so much trash.
Myself I would run the disc to the second preset, the sensitivity to presets if it will handle it as too much is not good either. I would run the relic mode and trigger in the center postion so you hear all the targets, the high tones will be the good ones while the lower tones the ones you may want to look at the meter to see what the ID is. Those that are low tone and deep you will want to dig no matter with the VDI are as our modern trash shouldnt be deep and here is where you will find some misc targets. Now if there is just too many low tones than you may want to push the trigger forward so you wont hear many of the low tones and work more on the high tones.
If it is real trashy than one of the smaller coils will work the best, I have the little 4X6 mini shooter and it will seperate plus it has some great depth, this coil has done well for us.

Thanks a lot guys, I truly appreciate your input. I think what I will do is make a recon patrol today with my stock coil and just see how trashy it is..
I do read over and over about getting a smaller coil and may do that. Finances are not a problem.

Here are a bunch of MXT Hints & Tips I've compiled from other sources. Perhaps there is something here that might help.

man..what a treasure of information.. thank you so much... I am going to sit down and read this very slowly and back up and read again.. I printed it off and I am sure, just like the manual, I will have to read it again and again.. but from a quick scan, there seems to be some really great info in here..
thanks again for sharing. I hope there comes the day when I can contribute.

the fairgrounds are really trashy. At least I did my good deed and cleaned up the fairgrounds some and I have a handy place to practice hunting trashy areas. I really want to go back. It seems like a good place to learn your detector.
right now I cant tell pull tabs from nickels from some jewelry.. maybe i never will be able to..
my best find outside of a few modern coins was a smashed revlon lipstick tube.. I will research the value of this treasure..
