First Predecimal and Jewelry - X-Terra 305

Out of Order

New member
Hi all, i've been watching for a while but really had nothing to contribute.. but finally i've had the time to hit one of the local parks.

I spent about a couple of hours tonight with only street lights to aid me.

Finally found my first predecimal coin - 1964 Australian Penny (possibly lawn mowed at some point), and i'm happy to announce my first gold (plated - has specks of silver on the back) heart shaped jewelry. I was quite surprised at how loud this small piece of jewelry rung out on the 305, it was found at the base of a gum tree about 3inches down. I also found some modern coins aswell as decommissioned coins (1c and 2c coins - no longer circulated). The park also had its fair share of pulltabs and bottle tops, but those objects gave me the necessary practice and tonal training i need to familiarise myself with the 305... i eventually stopped digging jumpy signals because all i was digging was pulltabs, if a suspected something was odd about the tone i'd dig.

I'm not too sure on cleaning the items i found - so the items are in their raw state.

It's great to see some posts from 305 users. I think that it's a very underrated detector. You have a great part of the world to detect. I chomp at the bit to get hunts down there. My totals go through the roof whenever I get to hunt in Sydney.
Congrats on your first pre decimal. I'm sure you will get better ones soon; but a penny is still a penny and definitely satisfying to find.
Mick Evans.

Good finds with the 305! I'd hit that park a few more times if there are still pre-decimals around. Nice work.

Great find.
You have to love that machine.
Glad you got out and had some fun..

Happy Hunting

Thanks for your comments.

Furious T had the right idea. I went out last night again to test my luck on pre-decimals, but unfortunately only walk away with 2x 20c / 1x 5c / 1x 1c / 1x broken tap handle / million pulltabs.

I Also had a little company, 2 rabbits doing a little night graising.

I'll be heading off to another park tonight, weather permitting.

You gotta love the 305, really easy to use and super lite weight.. I've been detecting in Discrimination mode 1 in the attempt to knock most of the junk iron, but i think tonight i'll go All Metal and focus on tones, i all so make it a bit of a habit to ground balance every so often depending on the different conditions of the ground (Dry - Wet - Soft - Hard), keeps the 305 quite stable.

One thing that is odd sometimes with the 305 is when i pass over a target and switch to pinpoint mode to locate the target, for some odd reason the pin point mode sound stays on even when i raise the coil off the ground and even raised above my head!? The sound stops when i switch back into detect mode and then back into pinpoint mode. I've tried to work out what was going on, tried noise cancel.. didn't resolve it... but one thing I did notice was ground balance was a bit off the mark everytime this happens, so i have to re ground balance, i'm guessing a change in ground conditions is keeping me on my toes.

thanks.

Finding coins and jewelry are what I'd call getting off to a good start! Congrats! As to the constant tone on Pinpoint.......could it be that you had the coil over a target when you switch to Pinpoint mode? Or, maybe you weren't holding the coil still when you switched over? Just a couple things to check out next time. HH Randy

Ahh.. yes! Thanks Digger, i think you've hit the nail on the head. I must admit that i do press pinpoint when over the target on occasions.

Your posting are always informative, and your article about Discrimination has inspired me to work in All Metal mode and listen to tone... and your tips on ground balancing has help aswell.

thanks.
