I have been practicing with my new Fisher 1270 for a couple of months and while I was getting better at finding Memorial pennies and clad coins around the neighborhood I had not found a good silver coin yet much less broken the "century" mark with a coin from the 1800's. I knew part of the problem was that I had not used the 1270 on a really promising site yet so I jumped at the chance when a neighbor suggested I dig on some of his property that had once been the location of a Doctor's office around the turn of the century. The first good signal I got from the 1270 was encouraging but I could not seem to find the target when I dug for it. When I swung the coil back over the dirt pile to check if I had already unearthed the object, my eye caught a blackened disc in the last handful of soil I had thrown out about the same time the Fisher signaled its presence. When I picked up the coin I knew I had finally broken the century mark, when I saw the Seated Liberty on this 1889 dime. After a few more signals that turned out to be some sort of brass or copper washers I dug a good signal to find another 1800 coin when I unearthed this 1899 Barber quarter. I plan to return to this site soon and see what else I might turn up there but I will be returning feeling like a true metal detectorist with at least a few good finds under my belt. The 1270 hit the dime at about 8 inches in sandy soil and the quarter at about 4 inches. What a thrill !! I can't wait to go back. Thanks for letting me share the excitement of these two finds.
