This is my first post so please pardon my utter lack of detecting "slang" and knowledge.
My grandfather died about four years ago and left his Garrett GTA 1000 to me; see we liked to go out exploring and detecting together so I guess he figured I would appreciate it. This is all well and good and I am honored to get such a lovely gift but I have a serious problem

Hi Michael ,you can get a manual from Garrett. Talk to Mary and she will take care of you. 1 800 527 4011. She has taken care of me and many others ,she takes cust. service to a whole new level. The 1000 is agreat machine and was and still is one of Garrett`s best.

Go to http://www.garrett.com and you can download a manual. The 1000 is a good machine and will get you some good finds. It does take practice when you first start out, so don't get discouraged. It has been recommended that when you first start detecting, stay in the Coins mode for your first 100 hours. Get used to what the machine is telling you in that mode then move on up to another mode. Back the Sensitivity down around 7 and it should smooth out for you. And set the Threshold so it is just barely audible. Yes, it will belltone when you bump things, and yes wet salt sand is tough. I'm sure there are some beach hunters on here that can enlighten you on some settings to get the most out of it in the wet sand.
Good luck and happy hunting.

On Florida beaches, I have found deep stuff in the wet sand, but on most of our Texas beaches, a coin buried deeper than 4" might as well be on the moon.
You will have to increase discrimination, decrease sensitivity until it levels out some. Electronic pinpointing may not work well here, just "X" your coil to pinpoint in wet sand. Dry sand shouldn't give you these problems.
As for your inland problems, you may need more practice. Remember that your pinpoint mode is an all metal mode and in heavy trash you will get a signal on every metal object down there. If the target you are trying to pinpoint seems to move, "Last Mode" back to all metal and see if there are multiple signals below.
These machines are usually very stable, if you are getting alot of false signals your sens. may be set too high (as John has said), OR your machine/coil may need repairs.
Post again if you have any more specific questions and I'll do my best to help!
HH All,
Skillet
