First Platinum Ring with Sov GT

Well now I know the Sov GT can easily detect a Platinum Ring...one that reads well below nickel on an Explorer. I am actually starting to find myself using the GT more than my Explorer! I would have never guessed that would happen :)

Awesome...well done! So the GT is head and shoulders above the Elite, in your opinion? And if so, what in particular?

Hi Mike,

I don't know if I would go that far. I know I like the GT. One of the big things I like about it is that they changed the Volume and Threshold Controls back to the way they were on the older Sov's. I kept knocking the Threshold out of adjustment on the Elite. I do feel that it is even more sensitive to small low conductive targets than any of the previous Sovs that I have owned. This is the first Platinum Ring I have ever found with a Sov. The others that I have found were all found with the Explorer. I don't know if you use the DIgital or the Smartfind Screen on your Explorer but I have always used the Smartfind Screen as I like all the information it gives me. I checked this ring on the Explorer and it reads dead center and with the cursor halfway off the bottom of the screen. This puts it to the left and lower than where a nickel reads. I don't use a meter on the Sov so I have no idea what TID number it would read. It did give a very low tone along the line of a beavertail from a pulltab. I also like the straight shaft design. The only thing I don't like is that while everyone else is making lighter and lighter detectors the Sov GT is the heaviest of the all the Sov's I have owned. At 5lbs 3oz without a meter it's a beast!!!! My waterproof Explorer only weighs in at 4lbs 6oz :) Even so the straight shaft with the detector set so far back counterbalances the coil quite well so it doesn't feel all that heavy.

Hey Beachcomber. I would like to here more about your waterproof Explorer and see some Pics. I have been debating on tring to build my own waterproof detector using an old whites Spectrum or even better an explorer. Not sure how to deal with pushbuttons to make them waterproof.

That is a beauty for sure, thought I might find a nugget in the Klondike last week, tried, but the GT came up empty. Will have another go soon at a patch, it is hard to lay my 3000 down for a trial...Geo

and hip mount that bad boy. You probably know it's kind of a pain to have that bag hanging on your belt, but it's much, much worse to be forced to end the day early because your arm is killing you. I've gone back and forth several times because I couldn't make up my mind but now I'm thoroughly convinced the only way to go with the Sov is a straight shaft and a hip (or chest) mount. Like swinging air. Sweet ring by the way. Probably set someone back a couple of grand.

Beachcomber,Fantastic find on a classic ring. I am curious on one thing.Have you ever compared a Sov. vs GT in AllMetal on a chain that the Sov. could Not hear?? Thanks for any response. Walter

Actually the only time I ahve used the All Metal Mode was the first time I used the GT. Ever since I have just used the Discriminate Mode. I have too much iron to deal with to use the All Metal Mode. Sorry I can't be of more help!

It would be lighter that way that is for sure. But when you hipmount the coils wires tend to break and then depending on where it broke you either can fix it or you need a new coil. I would rather deal with swinging the extra weight than buying new coils. I know people who hipmount thier Excaliburs and who have to have the coils replaced every year at $300 a pop. Hipmounting is not a viable option to me. It's kind of a catch 22 situation. If you hipmount you could break a coil wire. If you don't hipmount you will eventually break a headphone wire....but headphones wires are easier to repair. JMHO

I did post pix of it about 4 years ago when I built it. It's worked out quite well. I will have to take some more pix. When I do I will email them to you.
