Getting ready to head out for hunt with the Vision & Explorer .. Going to an old, pretty well hunted out sight .. There wont be many finds but if I find anything it should be worth while.. Will report back tonight, good or bad..I would like to thank Larry Kuehn for his extra effort to get the Vision to me for today... wildherre

As expected I didnt find much. Ive pretty much given up on this place with a big coil but have been doing decent with a smaller coil on the explorer, but since I don't have a small coil for the Vision yet so I used the stock 10.5" on the Explorer & the stock 10" D2 on the Vision.. I started out in Hi Pro & turned on tone ID & ran on 2.5 kHz. I searched around all of the trees like I always do, first with the Vision & followed it with the explorer . I found nothing . I did dig a couple of rusty bottle caps at 8 to 9" in case it was a dollar.. I was happy with the way the Vision was IDing the different pull tabs . I then just wandered around a bit getting the feel of the Vision. After a bit I threw a couple clad coins on the ground to check recovery .. It was very slow .. I'm used to running fast & deep setting on the Explorer. I found the recovery speed adjustment & dialed it down to 20, at 20 ( was still getting a single tone over each target. Anything lower than 20 I was getting 3 hits per target, leading edge, center & trailing edge.. The vision was now sounding like what I was used to & never touched the Explorer the rest of the day .. I picked up a 06 Indian at 5 1/2" a 11 V nickel at 7", 4 newer Lincolns at 3 to 4" and a 96 Barber Quarter at 6 1/4" & a neat Indiana Chauffeurs badge at about 7".. I the coin program & found it pretty mild, would be a great starting point for a novice user.. I didnt care for the deep silver program but didnt give it much time.. The Mixed mode pro was interesting but to weird for me today.. Click on link for pics... will be adding as night goes on .. wildherre

That may not sound like much to you, but I'd be happy with that type of haul any day. Great job!

Those sure are nice pictures! Wadyamean...didn't find much? (Nice job on a hunted out site.) Keep posting what you are learning as that will help us all!

Great find! That 1896-S Barber Quarter is a dandy. If you sell it, it should pay for a good portion of the cost of your detector.

That's the beauty of this hobby, aside from the sheer enjoyment , it's a hobby that pays for itself!

Weather permitting, this weekend I'll try the Vision at one of my "hunted out" relic sights.

Happy Hunting,
Blind Squirrel

You are the first to acknowledge the S .. I will be sending the barber to PCGS to be graded . My local coin dealer just graded it as "Fine" as all the letters in Liberty are visible & the blemishes are allowable for a coin of this age .. He offered 1300.. Yes, this coin will more than cover the cost of the Vision..

Wildherre, I agree with your coin dealers grade. That '96-S is a very nice coin. PCGS can be pretty tough in their grading though. A few years back, a friend of mine dug TWO nice 1916-D Mercs! They came back from PCGS ungraded because of corrosion. Subsequently, they were submitted to ANACS where they received "Net" grades of XF and F with the notation of corroded and cleaned. Hopefully your coin shows no sign of corrosion! As you probably know, PCGS now will encapsulate "problem" coins as Genuine , with no numerical grade assigned.

Very good find, Wildherre! I think that I would pitch my tent at that sight! hahahah

Happy Hunting,
Blind Squirrel

Ive gotten a few PMs asking if there are any negatives with the Vision. About the only thing I had a problem with was glare on the screen, lack of a full printed manual and the lack of a "Vision Ready" small coil.. I didn't get the headphones & used a pair of Timber wolf Howlers and they worked out flawlessly. I never even looked at the volume controls on the Vision.. wildherre

Hi wildherre,

I have done well detecting and I have to say I'm jealous of your finds. I do not live in old coin country and so would trade a 2 oz nugget find for the kind of coin finds you are making. The photos are exceptional also - well done.

Mixed Mode is extremely powerful but takes some getting used to. What is interesting is the all metal targets the disc can't hit. Real deep so do you take a chance and gamble? Most are probably iron but some will prove to be killer finds. I've got ideas about Mixed Mode but need to put it into practice before saying more.

Great finds. Thank you for sharing.

A few years ago I found a 1877 Indian Head & thought I would never find anything that good again........ No more than Ive been detecting lately I feel almost embarrassed to have found the Barber. Ill take it as a sign that I should get back to detecting more .. wildherre
