First one way, the the other

Here is something I am at a total loss to explain..I went to a site that was a slight hill. Worked it over in a very systematic manner North to South...Came back East to West, and got as many coins as I did the first time. Grabbed all the quarters and nickels the first time. Second walk through was cents and dimes. Vaquero, factory coil, Disc below nickel, Sensitivity at maximum..If I did the "drunkard's search" going in any direction, I could see it where the missed coins would have come from.....Thinking I should try 45 degrees next.. I've noticed that in this area, you can search NS, then come back SN and hit where you just were... Beginning to believe that once a rule is stated, and everyone accepts the idea, our Gods of Luck and Chance., scramble it..Cordially NAD

Sounds like you are having fun! I bet you will get more good targets at 45 degrees!

I think you are seeing the results of what is missed even with a fair bit of sweep overlap. As the signal pattern goes deeper, it gets smaller so at the farthest limits of sensitivity, even when overlapping the sweeps, the coverage is quite small and therefore easy to miss targets. Then coming back from a different direction, some of those missed targets get hit on that pass. One of the reasons a site is seldom truly "hunted out". Your approach with good overlaps should do a pretty good job of getting most of what's there. I agree with tvr, going over the same ground at 45 degrees should turn up a few targets that were missed while doing the other patterns. Also do the 45 degrees in both directions.
Think of the detection pattern as being similar to a V that has the point at the limit of the detector's sensitivity and it becomes obvious how easy it is to miss coin sized targets. Hope this makes sense.

You are getting it Nad.

It takes most people a long time to learn what
you are talking about.

Some people seemed doomed to make the same
mistakes over and over.

I am in that category sometimes, but it is nice to
break away from it and learn.

I think the experience will teach you things that
will benefit your endeavors in the hobby.

Happy Huntin,

I watched myself on a camera video by a friend who took it for just a keepsake. I could NOT believe how much area I was missing. I would do all right when stepping w/my right foot, but when I stepped with my left foot, I would move the coil 2 coil lengths and if you would've told me that I would have argued w/you that there was NO way I did that. Then, I noticed the front of the coil was raised nearly 2 inches and I woulda sworn it was level-and now I always tilt my front edge to where it appears too far down after seeing the video. If you want to do it perfectly, you have to make a forward and backward sweep and THEN step a teeny baby step and do it again. But, hey, I'm out there to have FUN! And since all my sites are repeats say every two weeks, I'm always, like you, in for surprises.:wiggle:

Bad news is that for 48 years I've been doing it wrong..Good news is that half ,or better than half, is still there...I don't have to search out new places for the next 48 years...Way back, you saw the diagrams of the flux / force lines as a mighty toroid reaching down to grasp coins at magnificent depths..You measured coin distance in air,,,,penny, dime , quarter etc, at the hottest spot..With the IB locators, everything rang...., gold, like the Bells of St Marys..I heard that nickel was para magnetic, and acted like iron at certain frequencies..So, when I got my first low Frequency detector and stopped finding nickels,i assumed it was because it acted like iron...Could have joined a club, took one member out, and he took his buddies out and cleaned up an excellent place to hunt..So, I stayed away, and did my own thing, which was research..I've mentioned that I have learned more in the last couple of months from you-all than in many years by my self..That is the truth..Regarding my search methods, detectors, coils, I am going to graph response to a target on each of the coils..full size dimensions. I should be able to pinpoint the proper overlap.Or throw it out for your opinions/ expertize.. The camera trick will come next..If it is used in everything from golf to diving, why not detectors.?? Gold star for that one..Have seen several people on You Tube swinging detectors..I'll wander over and check their techniques...Went out this AM to check a spot, caught in a down pour..Designer Wally World plastic bags work well keeping the water off your detectors..I got soaked, chilled and still can't get warm Cordially NAD
