First MD

I'm a retired old guy looking to buy my first MD. I've read hundreds of reviews and opinions and am now officially confused. I will be doing my initial detecting in northern WI and the UP of Michigan with some searching on the shores of Lake Superior, both areas have tons of Iron and minerals in the dirt. After all my research I think I'd like a Tesoro Vaquero, I believe I can devote enough time to learn it properly and it is in the price range I can afford. Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

I think the Vaquero would be the single best choice for your neck of the woods. You are not confused. You nailed it.

I'm not saying dont get the Vaquero, but if you have very mineralised ground, you could also consider the Lobo Super Trac...built for finding gold, but I believe it is also very good on coins, and built to handle mineralised soils.

i got a vaquero for my first detector. i think it has been a good choice.

The vaquero is a great choice for the kind of detecting you are planning to do. It should provide you with all the detector you will need for a while. I would not rule out the outlaw though. I think you might want to eventually compliment whatever detector you do decide on with the purchase of a Compadre. It has been my go to detector since I bought it. It is so much fun to use, affordable and has found many great things for me over 3 years. It use it to hunt for jewelry, clean out tot lots and areas I have searched an searched again. Seems like I always find more targets with it in areas that have been pounded by myself and others. You can't go wrong with purchasing a compadre. Metal detecting is the best hobby I have ever found and I hope you have a blast as well. HH

Thanks for the comments so far.
I am reading C. Thorstens book on Mastering the Tejon and Vaquero and notice that ground balancing is critical-any advice, tips, tricks, warnings, etc as to doing GB properly from Tesoro owners for this Newb?

threshold just so you can hear it  otherwise it will drive you nuts like it does me or Monte's power balance, I have real forgiving ground and use a big silver ring to balance too because from what I have seen a out of wack Tesoro that's the 1st thing that goes is big silver.

other than that don't be to hard on yourself its an art for sure balancing especially big DD coils so be kind to yourself and it will come the more times you do it the better but don't ware yourself out trying to get it perfect all in one day

I know you made a good choice. The ground balance is easy to do. After a few times, you will do it in just a few seconds. Since your ground has a lot of minerals, You might want to think about a DD coil. They were made for high mineral ground... Take your time with it and you will have a good time. Also,, Someday down the road after you find a bucket ao coins, You might want to pick up a compadre. They are a blast to use and they sure do find the tiny gold... KEN Ind.

Do you guys recommend/use pin pointers and if so do you have a preference and why?
Thanks for the help and answers to my questions, I can't wait to get started. I have found several bottle dumps over the years that my sons and I get some really cool bottles and jars from. As soon as I get my Tesoro I'm going back to those spots to look for the coins and relics I'm sure are there.

Thanks again for the help-

You will love the Vaquero, it's a fine detector that you will never outgrow. Ground balancing is a snap.
Depending on the ground in the U P you may want to invest in a DD coil also.
A pinpointer will speed up your target recovery and help prevent possible damage to your targets. They're a
must have item these days. Garrett and Whites make nice pinpointers but stay away from the cheap pinpointers.
I would be doing some searching for copper indian artifacts if I lived in your area. Good luck !
