Since early in my detecting days, I have wanted to be able to find and return a lost ring or other jewelry to someone. I finally got my chance this week. My wife alerted me to a post of a local small farmer that lost his ring while working on a tractor. We know him a little because we get our meat from him. So I contacted him and let him know I would be happy to come look for the ring. We set up a time on Wednesday at 8 am. I arrived and he took me to the spot where he first noticed it gone, and where the broken tractor was and where he had walked up and down the hill working on fencing. I started covering the open trail with the 17 inch CTX coil, to get maximum coverage, not missing any ground. I switched to the 6 inch coil to get close to the fencing and it worked great, didnt pick up the fence at all, so I was able to check directly under the fencing. I got an old axe head and a small buckle, but no ring yet. This area was below where he thought he lost it so i went back to the 17 inch coil and worked my way toward the tractor. I was only about 5 feet away from the tractor, next to the tire that he had taken off and i got a 8-31 10-31 signal that was loud and clear.(It's a tungsten carbide ring, rang in 12-31 with a air test afterward) I brushed away the dead leaves and saw a wonderful sight!(see below)
I found it after 2 hours of searching! He was in disbelief that I found it, but I knew I had a pretty good chance, based on how quick I got out there, and all the vegetation was either cleared out, or still dead from the winter. My reward was permission to hunt his late 1700's and early 1800's houses and barns and some extra meat next time we made an order. A detecting dream came true, hopefully I can find my LONG awaited seated silver coin somewhere on this land. What a great hobby we all have, right?
